Texas pastor and media executive Joel Webbon publicly called for the execution of U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, pairing the ambassador’s photograph with that of a convicted mass murderer and describing Huckabee as a traitor and religious heretic. Webbon subsequently qualified his remarks by insisting that any execution should follow a fair trial, but his media company later published a lengthy defense of executing Huckabee and his senior aide David Milstein.

“Publicly televised executions?” Webbon wrote in a post highlighted on X over the weekend. “Sure.”

“But let’s kill two birds with one stone,” he continued. Webbon accused Huckabee of concealing information concerning Christian churches in Israel and Americans allegedly killed by Israel, before describing him as “a traitor” and a “‘Judeo-Christian’ heretic.”

The post included side-by-side photographs of Huckabee and Nidal Malik Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted of murdering 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009. The Pentagon recently announced plans to livestream Hasan’s scheduled execution, a proposal that has prompted criticism from religious leaders and elected officials. Writer Joel Berry publicized Webbon’s remarks, stating that the pastor had called for Huckabee’s public execution.

A Subsequent Qualification, Not a Retraction

Following considerable pushback to his initial post, Webbon appeared to temper his remarks, adding: “Only after a fair trial, of course.”

However, Webbon did not withdraw his demand for Huckabee’s execution or retract his accusations against the ambassador. Later on Webbon’s media company NXR Studios published an article titled “Mike Huckabee, Treason, and the Necessity of Swift Justice.”

The publication argued that both Huckabee and Milstein should be investigated, prosecuted and executed if convicted. Neither man has been charged or even investigated for treason or any criminal offense in the context Webbon was discussing. The controversy followed an October 8 New York Times investigation alleging that Milstein had blocked or altered diplomatic reporting concerning Israeli government actions. Huckabee categorically rejected the newspaper’s allegations.

The initial demand prompted criticism from prominent conservatives. Texas Senator Ted Cruz responded, “This…is…sick.” Conservative broadcaster Mark Levin, Milstein’s step-father, accused Webbon of threatening Huckabee and Milstein and called for law enforcement action against those inciting deadly violence.

NXR’s subsequent article attacked Berry, Cruz and Levin for their criticism. It also repeatedly invoked Levin’s Jewish identity, described him as a “Chabad Jew,” and advanced sweeping accusations about Jews and Israel.

A Record of Controversial Statements

Webbon is the pastor of Covenant Bible Church in Georgetown, Texas, and a principal of NXR Studios, short for New Christian Right. The for-profit media operation has developed a substantial online audience.

A September Religion News Service investigation reported that NXR’s YouTube channel had approximately 187,000 subscribers and more than 20 million cumulative views. The publication documented the platform’s promotion of antisemitic and white nationalist ideas, although Webbon disputed its characterization of his content as promoting white supremacy.

The remarks about Huckabee are not Webbon’s first public endorsement of executions. In a 2024 sermon, Webbon suggested that publicly executing women found guilty of making false sexual assault accusations would quickly discourage such claims. “All you have to do is publicly execute a few women who have lied,” he declared.

Preparing a Controversial Texas Conference

The latest controversy comes as Webbon’s company prepares to host “Christ Is King: America After Trump,” a three-day conference scheduled for November 12–14 at the city-owned Irving Convention Center near Dallas.

A July Crosscurrents investigation documented the event’s controversial speaker lineup, including Dale Partridge, who has advocated repealing women’s voting rights, and pastors Brian Sauvé and Eric Conn, whose previous conference drew scrutiny after a vendor sold Nazi propaganda.

Since that investigation, NXR’s official lineup has expanded to include conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, scheduled to deliver the opening keynote, and Buckley Carlson, the brother of conservative commentator Tucker Carlson.

Another scheduled speaker, NXR host Harrison Smith, read aloud a social media commentator’s demand for Huckabee and Milstein to be prosecuted for treason and executed if convicted during an October 9 broadcast. The program also promoted NXR’s upcoming conference. The other speakers’ scheduled participation does not establish that they endorse Webbon’s execution demand.

The conference will open with an address by Webbon advertised as his “Manifesto,” followed by Jones’s keynote. The controversy surrounding Webbon’s remarks has therefore emerged just weeks before an event intended to bring together his media company’s speakers and supporters. His subsequent reference to a fair trial did not amount to a retraction, and NXR’s October 11 publication made clear that the demand for the execution of Huckabee and Milstein remained part of its public position.

A new activist project is seeking to connect several strands of the American left through a common defense framework. The NSPM-7 Defendants Union invites participants in Palestine solidarity campaigns, anti-ICE organizing, Tesla Takedown protests, opposition to data centers and land-defense movements to share legal strategies and turn criminal cases into opportunities for political organizing. Its stated ambition extends beyond helping individual defendants: it wants different movements to see themselves as participants in the same struggle.

The project takes its name from President Donald Trump’s September 25, 2025, national security memorandum, “Countering Domestic Terrorism and Organized Political Violence.” The directive orders federal agencies to investigate political violence and the networks that organize or finance it. It also directs scrutiny of potential foreign-influence and money-laundering violations connected to domestic terrorism. The union presents that policy as an attack on the political left and proposes a coordinated response.

Different Causes, a Common Defense

The union’s website explicitly connects cases across movements. It argues that lessons from a Palestine-related prosecution could assist a future No Kings defendant, while defense strategies developed after Trump’s 2017 inauguration could help activists facing conspiracy charges today. Its organizers describe their own backgrounds in climate, abolitionist and socialist activism, including experience as defendants and supporting prisoners.

These movements have different immediate targets. Palestine solidarity campaigns focus on Israel and institutions associated with it. Anti-ICE organizing challenges immigration enforcement. Stop Cop City opposes Atlanta’s police and firefighter training center. Tesla Takedown targets Elon Musk’s company through protests, boycotts and divestment. Campaigns against data centers contest technology infrastructure. The union seeks to connect participants through their encounters with police, prosecutors and courts.

Its invitation also extends to people whose organizations were named in what the site calls the State Department’s “Cuba Report” and who expect they may be under surveillance. The invitation illustrates the project’s intended reach, but does not establish that those organizations participate.

That distinction matters throughout the article. The site does not publish a roster establishing that every movement or organization it mentions has formally joined. Its FAQ expressly says it has no official members. Instead, it organizes around a shared pledge and seeks to circulate resources across political campaigns.

Solidarity Without Denunciation

The project’s pledge contains a particularly consequential commitment: “I will not publicly denounce the tactical choices of anyone accused of actions I don’t personally agree with.”

The surrounding explanation treats disagreement over tactics as a potential source of division that benefits the government. Participants are also asked to refuse cooperation with investigators and prosecutors, publicize their cases, pursue collective defense and share information learned through discovery.

The non-denunciation provision does not specify an exception for violent acts. That does not establish that every participant endorses violence. It does raise a concrete question about the boundaries of the proposed framework: when tactics differ, how much public solidarity does the union expect?

The question is particularly relevant because the project prominently invokes the Prairieland defendants. The July 4, 2025, incident at the Texas immigration detention facility included a shooting that wounded a responding police officer. Benjamin Hanil Song was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 100 years in prison, according to the Justice Department’s June 23, 2026, announcement.

Defense attorneys disputed the prosecution’s broader characterization of the gathering as a planned terrorist attack. The union’s references to the case do not establish that Song personally participates in the project.

Turning Prosecutions Into Organizing

The union says its resources include media training, access to legal office hours through the People’s Law Collective, connections to journalists and instruction on building support committees. Its stated purpose is to make movements more resilient and circulate lessons from individual cases nationwide.

Its pledge goes further, encouraging defendants to use the attention surrounding their cases to promote their movement’s ideas. Under that approach, prosecution becomes both a legal problem and a platform for attracting political support.

The significance lies in the proposed exchange of knowledge and resources across campaigns with different goals. A defense strategy developed in an immigration-enforcement case could inform a campus activist’s response to prosecution. Publicity methods used by forest defenders could be adopted elsewhere. The project seeks to make those exchanges systematic.

Defendants retain the right to counsel and a fair trial. The public also has reason to examine a political framework that asks participants to withhold criticism of tactics they themselves oppose. How that principle operates in practice will help determine what this new organizing network becomes.

An accredited Chicago college is building an academic partnership with a Texas seminary whose dean, Yasir Qadhi, publicly identified himself in 2025 as a member of an international scholars’ union that months earlier called jihad against the occupation an individual obligation and demanded weapons, expertise and intelligence for fighters.

American Islamic College (AIC) and The Islamic Seminary of America (TISA) will promote the project at an October 23, 2026, fundraising dinner in Willowbrook, Illinois. Yasir Qadhi, TISA’s dean of academic affairs, is the advertised keynote speaker. The lineup also includes former national leaders of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights and civil liberties advocacy organization, and a former Holy Land Foundation (HLF) fundraiser.

The institutions say the partnership will prepare future Muslim scholars, chaplains, educators and community leaders. TISA president Abdullah al Mamun says the agreement is intended to make Islamic higher education more accessible and offer students additional academic, spiritual and professional opportunities.

Qadhi’s International Affiliation

In a June 2025 post discussing International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) president Ali al-Qaradaghi’s support for Zohran Mamdani, Qadhi identified himself as a member, calling it “the most respectable and mainstream group of global scholars in the world.”

The Qatar-based organization was founded by Yusuf al-Qaradawi, whom George Washington University’s Program on Extremism describes as the Muslim Brotherhood’s longtime spiritual leader.

In a fatwa, or religious ruling, dated March 28, 2025, the IUMS Committee for Ijtihad and Fatwa demanded military intervention against Israel, citing its renewed Gaza offensive.

The ruling declared supplying fighters with “weapons, expertise, and intelligence” a binding duty. It called jihad against the occupation an individual obligation for every capable Muslim and required wealthy Muslims to finance fighters.

The English version was published April 1. Its signature block names committee secretary Fadl Abdullah Murad and chairman Ali Mohieddin al-Qaradaghi.

A Former Holy Land Foundation Fundraiser

Advertised speaker Kifah Mustapha worked for approximately five years through 2001 as HLF’s sole Illinois employee and raised funds for it, according to a 2013 federal court opinion.

HLF and five leaders were convicted in 2008 of providing material support to Hamas. The Justice Department said they provided approximately $12.4 million through Hamas-affiliated committees and organizations. Mustapha was not among those five defendants.

The opinion, concerning his challenge to losing an Illinois State Police chaplaincy, described a performance featuring Mustapha. It reproduced English subtitles including, “O, Hamas, teach us the rifle.”

Mustapha testified that he was approximately 19 at the time, before his HLF employment. He characterized the song as cultural and told investigators he condemned Hamas and suicide bombings.

The Leadership Overlap

AIC’s interim president and chief academic officer, James Jones, simultaneously serves as TISA’s executive vice president. CAIR’s biography says he spent nine years on its national board, including service as treasurer and secretary.

Roula Allouch, an AIC trustee and advertised speaker, chaired CAIR’s national board for eight years and now co-chairs its Emeritus Board. CAIR identifies her as a TISA faculty member; the seminary also lists her on its advisory board.

The institutional overlap extends beyond CAIR. TISA trustee chair Iqbal Unus previously directed the Fairfax Institute at the International Institute of Islamic Thought. His biography identifies him as Muslim Students Association president in 1975 and Islamic Society of North America secretary general during the 1980s.

The October dinner seeks backing for a project intended to train future imams, chaplains and institutional leaders. The result is an accredited Chicago college building that pipeline with a seminary whose dean publicly identifies as an IUMS member and whose leadership includes the figures documented above. At the same time, the institutions’ public announcements do not specify how degrees would be awarded or who would exercise academic oversight over the proposed joint programs.

Argentinian President Javier Milei used the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday to accuse the organization of failing at its founding mission while claiming authority over matters it was never meant to control.

He said the UN had become a “useless organization whose only purpose is to sustain a caste of fatally arrogant parasites masquerading as well-intentioned bureaucrats.” The insult landed from the General Assembly lectern, in a speech Milei had introduced as a constructive assessment of the institution.

The UN, he said, had failed to uphold international law, protect human rights and provide meaningful collective security. At the same time, it had grown eager to shape economic policy, public health measures and now the governance of artificial intelligence.

The Mission Milei Says the UN Abandoned

Milei accused the UN of failing to protect human rights and collective security. He said it had accommodated dictatorships while allowing violence and terrorism to flourish, then questioned what its resolutions were worth when they had no effect beyond the General Assembly.

He made that complaint concrete through Argentina’s dispute with Britain over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas. Milei pointed to a 1976 UN resolution calling for renewed sovereignty negotiations and urging both governments to refrain from unilateral changes while the dispute remained unresolved. He cited the British licensed Sea Lion oil project, which Argentina opposes, as evidence that the UN’s words had failed to influence events.

Milei asked what use a resolution was if the other side could act against it for decades while it remained powerless in the UN’s archives.

Britain maintains its sovereignty claim and says the islanders have the right to determine their political future, including whether to develop the islands’ natural resources. The resolution does not settle the dispute or establish that the oil project is unlawful. Milei used the disagreement to question the UN’s authority when its resolutions fail to change what governments do.

A New Fight Over AI

Milei then turned from what the UN had failed to do to what he said it had taken upon itself to do. He accused the organization of building a “bureaucratic leviathan” concerned with how countries manage their economies, borders and citizens’ lives. He reserved some of his sharpest language for pandemic lockdowns, which he called a global exercise in social control.

Artificial intelligence was his forward-looking example. The UN has already established a dialogue on AI governance and an international scientific panel to assess the technology’s risks and opportunities. Those bodies do not themselves impose binding rules on countries. They do give the UN an organized role in a debate over how the technology should be governed.

Milei wants Argentina to take a different approach. He pledged against regulating AI preemptively and proposed tax benefits and limited liability for companies operating AI agents. He portrayed the technology as an opportunity to raise productivity, attract investment and give Argentina a place in a rapidly changing global economy.

That position raises questions of its own. AI agents can act with limited human supervision, and the UN’s scientific panel has examined the risk of systems behaving contrary to their operators’ intentions. Milei’s speech did not resolve how Argentina would handle such risks under the framework he proposed. He framed the immediate danger as governments restricting innovation before its benefits could emerge.

Milei said Argentina would continue to participate in international forums where cooperation served a purpose. His challenge was to an institution he believes has inverted its priorities: unable to enforce its most basic promises, yet ready to help write the rules for the next technological era.

A Texas Christian nationalist pastor ignited a firestorm this week by posting a video titled “The Right Must Embrace Socialism To Win” on X, explicitly calling for conservatives to adopt socialist economic policies to compete with what he describes as the Left’s vote-buying strategy.

The statement from Joel Webbon—senior pastor of Covenant Bible Church in Georgetown, Texas—drew immediate condemnation from mainstream conservatives who pointed to what they say is a damning detail: Webbon has spent the past year praising Nazi Germany as a “Christian nation” America should have supported, lamenting the U.S. alliance with Communist Russia in World War II, and interviewing Holocaust deniers.

Critics quickly identified what they say is the “particular flavor” of socialism Webbon appears to advocate: National Socialism—the economic system of the Third Reich, whose ruling party was formally known as the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, or NSDAP).

Immediate Backlash From Conservatives

“Yesterday Joel Webbon was threatening lawsuits to everyone who called him a National Socialist lol,” posted Joel Berry, former managing editor of the Babylon Bee and current producer for Jeremy Boreing’s show.

Even James Lindsay, the atheist anti-woke commentator who built his reputation battling critical race theory, quote-tweeted Webbon’s post with a terse “How about that.”

Twitter user John William Sherrod made the connection explicit: “Reminder that when Joel Webbon says the right needs to embrace socialism, there’s a particular flavor of socialism he’s on record as endorsing…”

In a follow-up post, Webbon clarified his position: “The Left is happy to provide handouts to its voters. The GOP sends the children of its voters - White Christians - to die in the sand in endless wars. I don’t like socialism either. But I blame democracy tied to universal suffrage… not ‘socialism’.”

Based on these public statements, Webbon’s core argument appears to be that democracy itself—specifically, letting everyone vote—is the problem. His proposed solution appears to involve a welfare state that serves “White Christians” while excluding others.

“We Should Have Sided With the Christian Nation”

Webbon’s call for right-wing socialism didn’t emerge in a vacuum. In February 2026, the pastor lamented that the United States allied with Communist Russia instead of what he characterized as “Christian” Nazi Germany during World War II.

“Part of the reason that the battle has gotten as difficult as it is today, that communism has been winning, the Bolsheviks have been winning, is because, you know, some of the most powerful Christian nations in the world teamed up with the Bolsheviks,” Webbon said on his Right Response Ministries podcast. “We said, ‘You know what? Give us Barabbas. Give us the Communist... We’ll side with the Communist. A Christian nation, we got to kill those guys. Lutheran Christian monarchy... we should have stayed out of it.’”

The clip, documented by Right Wing Watch, shows Webbon explicitly characterizing Nazi Germany as a “Christian nation” and “Lutheran Christian monarchy” while condemning Allied actions against the Third Reich.

Earlier in 2026, Webbon sat for a 10-part interview series with Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes, including an episode titled “The Inner Workings of ‘World Jewry,’” according to the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism.

A Pattern of Extremism

Webbon’s recent posts fit what critics describe as a documented pattern of increasingly extreme rhetoric:

In April 2026, he argued America needs “more racism,” stating: “It’s so clear that America does not have a racist problem. White people in America are, if anything, I think, too trusting, too gullible, toxic empathy. So not only is racism non-existent, if anything, we could probably use a little bit more racism in America.”

In September 2025, he told white Christian parents they owed their children “The Talk”—warning them that “if they’re Black strangers, there is 30 times more danger. Them’s the facts.”

In March 2025, he stated that America “belongs to Christians” and “it’s not for Hindus. It’s not for Muslims. And it’s not for Jews.”

He has called for “a Christian Nationalist Caesar” who would protect America from what he termed “war Jews” and “gay Jews,” saying the leader should rule “Constitution be damned, just rules with an iron fist.” He also said women should be removed from all leadership roles in the government.

The Welfare State—For Christians Only

Webbon’s economic vision emerged more clearly in a separate podcast where he addressed what should happen if America’s welfare state collapses. Speaking about a hypothetical 65-year-old childless woman with “blue or purple hair” who had used birth control and antidepressants, Webbon declared: “The church needs to be able to look at her and say, ‘You starve. You starve. Glory be to God. You starve.’”

The statement—analyzed on the Data Over Dogma podcast—appears to reveal Webbon’s vision: government assistance should flow to “our people” (white Christians) while those outside that circle should be left to die.

Critics argue this aligns with the National Socialist economic model, which provided extensive social welfare programs—healthcare, pensions, labor protections, subsidized housing—but only for those deemed part of the Volksgemeinschaft (people’s community). Jews, Roma, political dissidents, and others were systematically excluded from state benefits before being targeted for extermination.

The Nazi regime pioneered what historians call “racial socialism”—generous welfare for Aryans funded partly by the expropriation of Jewish wealth and businesses. It’s a model that rejects both free-market capitalism and Marxist internationalism in favor of ethnic solidarity backed by state power.

The Tell

Webbon’s follow-up post contained what critics describe as a telling detail. He wrote that he blames “democracy tied to universal suffrage” for creating the dynamic where the Left provides handouts to win votes.

Universal suffrage—the right of all citizens to vote—is what Webbon opposes. He has repeatedly stated that women should not be allowed to vote, that their suffrage “stole half his vote,” and that only Christians should hold public office.

Based on his documented public statements, what he appears to be advocating for isn’t simply adopting some left-wing economic policies. Critics argue he’s rejecting democracy itself in favor of a Christian ethnostate that provides for its own while condemning outsiders to death.

Critics contend the parallel to National Socialism is unmistakable. The Nazi regime rejected both liberal democracy and Marxist class warfare in favor of an ethnically defined welfare state. Hitler’s speeches frequently attacked “Jewish capitalism” and “Jewish Bolshevism” while promising German workers security—as long as they were racially acceptable.

Observers note Webbon’s formula appears nearly identical: reject democracy (universal suffrage), embrace socialism (for our people), exclude the undesirables (non-Christians, feminists, those who “hate the patriarchy”), and let them starve while proclaiming “Glory be to God.”

The Lawsuit Threat

When critics connected those dots and called it National Socialism, Webbon’s response wasn’t to clarify or correct the record. According to Berry, someone affiliated with Webbon—identified only as “Charles”—threatened lawsuits against those making the connection.

The Christian nationalist pastor who has publicly stated he wants to protect “White Christians” from endless wars, who has praised what he characterized as the “Christian nation” of Nazi Germany that he suggested America should have supported, who has interviewed Holocaust deniers, who has called for more racism in America, and who now explicitly advocates “socialism” for the right while saying non-Christians should starve has discovered that some labels — once earned — are hard to shake. Even when you threaten to sue over them.

Candace Owens and her husband George Farmer met with individuals involved in facilitating the relocation of Western conservatives to Russia during their June 2026 trip, national security analyst Ryan Mauro alleged in a bombshell investigation published this week. Interestingly, Andrew and Tristan Tate met with at least one of the same people at the exact same time in the same Russian city. The meetings, Mauro claims, were part of an “all-but-certain plan to avoid asset seizures from lawsuits & possible prosecution by relocating to Russia & probably moving assets to Dubai, UAE.”

If accurate, it would represent one of the most significant foreign influence operations targeting American media personalities since the Cold War. Owens faces a defamation lawsuit from French First Lady Brigitte Macron. The Tate brothers are fighting human trafficking and rape charges in Romania and the UK (which they deny). Both parties have expertise or interest in evading Western legal systems. Both showed up in Russia. Both, Mauro alleges, met with the same operatives.

Mauro first exposed Owens’ deception in June. She initially framed her trip as a family vacation — cathedral visits, her husband’s “fishing” trips. That story collapsed when Mauro revealed she was a scheduled speaker at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russia’s state-managed answer to Davos. She spoke on a panel titled “Big Family, Big Reach: New Demographics and Narratives for Media Managers” — a session that openly asked “What is more effective: direct financial payments and targeted assistance or a comprehensive ecosystem?” Her co-panelists included four individuals sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department or European Union for information warfare, war financing, and justifying the forced deportation of Ukrainian children.

But SPIEF itself, Mauro now argues, was a second cover. The real purpose: meetings with people who facilitate permanent relocation for Westerners fleeing what Russia frames as persecution. And Andrew Tate — who has spent years perfecting the art of hiding assets from authorities across multiple jurisdictions — was there to help show how it’s done.

The Dubai-Russia Corridor

The Tate brothers’ presence is the critical detail Mauro identifies. They are not ideologues or media personalities in Owens’ mold. They are operational experts in asset concealment. Romanian authorities have seized millions in luxury vehicles and property from Andrew Tate as part of their criminal investigation. He and Tristan operate primarily from Dubai — a jurisdiction known for non-extradition protections and financial opacity. When Mauro broke the story about Owens’ Russia trip in June, he raised a specific question about Dubai connections.

The playbook, according to Mauro’s analysis: relocate legal residency to Russia under the “Shared Values” visa, park assets in Dubai beyond the reach of American courts, and maintain plausible deniability by framing the move as ideological refuge rather than legal evasion. Russia provides the sanctuary. Dubai provides the financial infrastructure. The defection facilitators provide the logistics and “100% guaranteed confidentiality.”

Owens’ subsequent behavior fits the pattern Mauro predicted. When he first publicly accused her of making defection preparations, she did not deny it. Instead, weeks later, she announced she was “moving somewhere for a fresh start” and “getting rid of everything.” Mauro also noted that Owens revealed George Farmer “regularly sweeps their house for listening devices.” That level of operational security is not standard practice for media personalities. It is standard practice for individuals concerned about intelligence collection.

The Defection Infrastructure

Russia has built physical and legal infrastructure to operationalize this pipeline. In August 2024, Vladimir Putin signed a decree creating the “Shared Values” visa — a pathway for foreigners who embrace “traditional Russian spiritual and moral values” and reject what Moscow calls the “destructive neoliberal ideological agenda” of the West. Applicants receive single-entry visas and can apply for temporary residence without demonstrating Russian language skills, knowledge of Russian history, or understanding of Russian law. The United States appears on the approved list of countries deemed to be pursuing that “destructive agenda.”

At SPIEF, Russian architect Anton Glikin — who described Trump administration official Rodney Mims Cook Jr. as his “surrogate father” — revealed he is designing a settlement in Nizhny Novgorod for 450 Western immigrants arriving under the visa. This is not abstract policy. It is operational infrastructure. And the network facilitating it, according to Mauro’s investigation, promises absolute confidentiality — a feature that would appeal to anyone concerned about surveillance, legal exposure, or public scrutiny of their relocation.

The historical model exists. During the Cold War, the KGB spent 5 percent of its budget promoting Angela Davis as a symbol of American injustice, using her to inflame racial tensions while framing the Soviet Union as a haven. Maria Butina, the Russian operative who infiltrated conservative circles through the NRA and was convicted of acting as an unregistered foreign agent, pioneered the modern version — building relationships with American conservatives, identifying potential recruits, and creating pathways for deeper engagement with Russian power structures. The defection facilitators Mauro references may be the next evolution: offering not just ideological affinity but legal and financial sanctuary.

The SPIEF Recruitment Pipeline

SPIEF itself functions as what Mauro, citing what he described as leaked documents, called a “recruitment pipeline” for Western influencers. The forum’s partner architecture is entirely composed of sanctioned Russian state entities: VEB.RF, Rosatom, Sber, VTB Bank, PSB Bank, and Gazprom-Media. Every funding partner is either sanctioned or run by sanctioned individuals. Positive Technologies, one of the forum’s partners, was specifically designated by the U.S. Treasury in 2021 for using its conventions as “recruiting events for the FSB and GRU.”

The forum also has a documented Jeffrey Epstein connection. Epstein and his Russian assistant helped organize SPIEF panels before his 2019 death. Mauro noted that Epstein’s closest Russian collaborators remain involved in the forum’s structure. In September 2024, the Justice Department indicted two Russia Today employees for funneling $10 million through shell companies to pay American right-wing influencers to produce pro-Kremlin content. RT, the sanctioned outlet at the center of that operation, is now the General International News Partner of SPIEF 2026.

Alexander Dugin, the Russian ideologue who also spoke at the forum, provides the intellectual architecture. His 1997 book Foundations of Geopolitics, used as a textbook at Russia’s military academy, explicitly prescribes destabilizing the United States by “encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts” while “supporting isolationist tendencies in American politics.” In December 2024, the Treasury sanctioned Dugin’s Center for Geopolitical Expertise for running a GRU-funded operation using AI deepfakes to target the 2024 U.S. election across a network of at least 100 fake news websites.

What Owens Won’t Answer

Mauro has repeatedly asked Owens to answer two basic disclosure questions: What communications has she had with Alexander Dugin? When and why did she endorse a Putin-style Tsarist model of government? She has not responded. Instead, she posted from Russia that criticism of her trip was “fake and gay” and that “literally everything is fake” about Western coverage of Russia. She told reporters at SPIEF that “Americans are getting tired of funding and not knowing where the money is going” in Ukraine. Russian state media amplified every statement.

Her husband’s travel patterns add another layer. Owens claimed George Farmer “regularly travels to Russia to go fishing.” For a British businessman with no publicly documented business interests in Russia, repeated trips raise questions about the nature of those visits. Combined with the operational security measures — sweeping the house for listening devices — the pattern suggests contact with entities or individuals who would have reason to conduct surveillance.

The Tate brothers’ simultaneous presence in Russia, which they posted from Moscow with videos of a traditional Russian welcome ceremony, appeared designed to look coincidental. But Mauro’s allegation that they met with at least one of the same defection facilitators as Owens transforms coincidence into coordination. A representative for the Tate brothers told NBC News they visited “to see how the country works, understand how people live, and talk about it based on what they actually experience.” That explanation does not address why their itinerary overlapped with Owens and Farmer in the same region at the same time.

The Broader Operation

The defection network, if it functions as Mauro alleges, represents something more operational than passive amplification. It offers legal sanctuary, financial infrastructure, and guaranteed confidentiality to Western figures facing legal pressure or seeking to relocate assets beyond the reach of their home countries. Russia provides the ideological cover — “shared values,” religious freedom, escape from “woke” persecution. Dubai provides the financial mechanism. The facilitators provide the operational bridge.

Mauro has indicated he has additional evidence he plans to release, including what he described as “another bombshell.” The investigation is ongoing. What is already documented is this: Candace Owens traveled to Russia under false pretenses, spoke on a panel with sanctioned Russian officials about funding mechanisms for Western media, and, according to Mauro’s investigation, met with people who facilitate defection of Western conservatives to Russia. Andrew and Tristan Tate were there at the same time, in the same place, and allegedly met with at least one of the same people. Weeks later, Owens announced she was moving and liquidating her assets. Her husband sweeps their house for listening devices.

Cross Currents previously documented the SPIEF panel structure and the warning signs Mauro identified in Owens’ initial Russia trip. The new allegations connect those warning signs to an operational network with physical infrastructure, financial mechanisms, and expert facilitators. Whether Owens ultimately relocates to Russia or moves assets to Dubai remains to be seen. What is already clear is that Russia has built the capability to offer both options, and that it extended that offer to one of America’s most prominent conservative media personalities — while simultaneously hosting the men who wrote the playbook on evading Western legal systems through jurisdictional arbitrage.

The question is no longer whether Russia is targeting American influencers. The question is how many have already taken the meeting.

On the night of August 4, 2026, Abdul El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary — becoming the first Muslim ever nominated by a major American party for the U.S. Senate. He overcame enormous sums of spending against him, a late endorsement of Stevens by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and the alignment of nearly the entire state Democratic establishment. Most coverage has framed the result as a far-left, progressive upset.

This reading is incomplete. What happened in Michigan was the convergence of two political movements that had spent the previous decade building separate but increasingly complementary infrastructures: a far-left, Bernie Sanders-style progressive base and a Muslim political organizing network centered in Dearborn. Arguably, neither could have delivered a Senate nomination alone. Together, they did. El-Sayed didn’t cause the confluence. He is it.

Wing One: The Muslim Dearborn Base

The first current began on the factory floor in the early 20th century. In January 1914, Henry Ford announced the $5-a-day wage at his Highland Park plant, and Lebanese Muslims from the Bekaa Valley settled Dearborn’s Southend to work the Rouge Complex. The 1965 Hart-Celler Immigration Act abolished national-origin quotas and installed family reunification as the dominant admission category, growing the U.S. Muslim population from roughly 150,000 in 1965 to approximately three million today. The Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990) drove Shia refugees into Dearborn; a peak wave of Yemenis settled Hamtramck’s Polish neighborhoods; the 1991 Gulf War and the 2003 Iraq War produced 19,490 Iraqi refugees placed in Michigan by federally contracted resettlement agencies.

The political payoff arrived on a fixed schedule. In 2013, Hamtramck became the first Muslim-majority city in the United States; in 2015 it elected the first Muslim-majority city council; by 2022 the council and mayor were entirely Muslim-American. In 2018, Rashida Tlaib — a Democratic Socialists of America member endorsed by Justice Democrats — won Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. In 2020, Abraham Aiyash, a Yemeni-American from Hamtramck, won a Michigan House seat with 89.7 percent of the general vote; by 2023 he was House majority floor leader. In 2021, Abdullah Hammoud became Dearborn’s first Arab-American mayor.

Then came the Uncommitted movement, launched in late 2023 to pressure the Biden administration over its Gaza policy. In Michigan’s February 2024 Democratic presidential primary, more than 100,000 votes went to “Uncommitted.” That November, Kamala Harris’ share of the Dearborn vote collapsed from Biden’s 69 percent in 2020 to 36 percent. Trump carried Michigan.

Wing Two: The Far-Left Squad Machine

The second current is much younger and runs from a college-town uprising. On March 8, 2016, Bernie Sanders won the Michigan Democratic presidential primary 49.7 to 48.3 — despite trailing Hillary Clinton in polling by an average of 21.4 points. It was the largest polling miss of the modern primary era. Sanders swept independents 71–28, dominated Washtenaw, Ingham, and Kalamazoo counties, and turned Michigan into what FiveThirtyEight called a “major turning point.”

The infrastructure followed immediately. Kelly Collison — who had founded Michigan for Bernie in 2015 — and Sam Pernick of the Michigan Young Democrats founded Michigan for Revolution (M4R) to organize former Sanders voters inside the state party. By the February 2017 Michigan Democratic Party convention at Cobo Center, M4R had built 18 chapters, signed up more than 1,000 new party members, captured the chairmanship of the MDP Progressive Caucus, and placed more than 40 members on the state central committee.

The same year in Washington, former Sanders staff founded Justice Democrats — the recruiting apparatus that would elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush, and Jamaal Bowman. Its communications director was Waleed Shahid, a Pakistani-Muslim organizer from Arlington, Virginia.

Metro Detroit’s Democratic Socialists of America chapter, which had fallen below 700 members in 2023, has nearly doubled to 1,400 members and set a public target of 3,000 by the end of 2028. In November 2025, DSA members Denzel McCampbell and Gabriela Santiago-Romero won two Detroit City Council seats. In February 2026, the Michigan Working Families Party announced a coordinated statewide slate under state director Branden Snyder — the former founder of Detroit Action — telling Michigan Advance the WFP was executing a “10-year plan to co-govern” modeled on the New York coalition that had just elected Zohran Mamdani.

The Man Who Is Both

El-Sayed’s biography reads like the two currents braided into a single person. He was born October 31, 1984, in Rochester Hills — the Detroit suburb where the Islamic Association of Greater Detroit, had been founded six years earlier by thirty immigrant families. His father Mohamed had arrived from Egypt in 1978 on a Wayne State University engineering fellowship — the Hart-Celler pathway in one biography.

At the University of Michigan, El-Sayed served as vice president of the campus Muslim Students Association. (MSA). The MSA was allegedly founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood and was among the organizations listed in a 1991 internal memorandum written by a Muslim Brotherhood member and later introduced as evidence during the Holy Land Foundation prosecution. He described the role himself in a 2012 Nation piece: “MSA of Michigan was many times named student organization of the year… we were normally at the lead of issues concerning minority student groups and religious organizations on campus.” He then married into the Tayeb family.

His father-in-law, Jukaku Tayeb, self-identifies on the Islamic Society of North America’s own website as an ISNA Founders Committee member, past president of CAIR-Michigan, current CAIR-Michigan board member, board member of the Michigan Muslim Community Council, chairman of the HUDA Free Clinic, and past president of the Islamic Association of Greater Detroit — the Rochester Hills mosque whose co-founder, Dr. Ghaus Malik, currently chairs ISNA’s Founders Committee.

These organizations are nor trivial. ISNA is listed in the 1991 Muslim Brotherhood “Explanatory Memorandum” as one of “our organizations,” a document outlining a long-term strategy of influence in North America of “civizational jihad.” The United Arab Emirates placed CAIR on a list of designated terrorist organizations in 2014. In 2025, the governors of Texas and Florida issued their own state-level designations, which CAIR challenged in federal court. In the Holy Land Foundation trial, the largest terror-financing trial in U.S. history, federal prosecutors named both ISNA and CAIR as unindicted co-conspirators linked to the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood network that supported Hamas.

In August 2015, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan appointed El-Sayed — then thirty and with no elected experience — executive director of the Detroit Health Department, providing the establishment-Democratic credential. In 2018, he ran for governor. Sanders endorsed him. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed him. Linda Sarsour headlined the #MyMuslimVote rally in Dearborn. It was the first documented moment the two wings shared a stage. In 2019, El-Sayed headlined a $10,000 fundraiser for Detroit DSA — where organizers called him “a longtime friend” and he was photographed alongside Tlaib behind a banner depicting a hand marked “DSA” choking a snake marked “capitalism.” He also insists — accurately — that he is “not technically or practically DSA.” Both statements are true.

The Convergence

By the primary’s closing week, everything each wing had built for a decade was running in the same seventy-two hours. Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez barnstormed the state with El-Sayed; the full congressional Squad endorsed him; DSA volunteers who covered their red shirts with green ones to knock doors more comfortably worked the ground game. On July 24 — the same Friday — CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad delivered the sermon at the IONA mosque in Warren, praising “mosques renting buses to take people to the polls,” while Imam Hassan Qazwini urged congregants at his Islamic Institute of America in Dearborn Heights to treat voting as a religious duty against the “pro-Israel lobby.”

The Fighting for Michigan super PAC supporting El-Sayed collected $200,000 — nearly half its total — from his father-in-law. On August 4, El-Sayed won. The same night, Sunrise Movement co-founder William Lawrence took Michigan’s 7th District primary; Working Families Party endorsee Donavan McKinney, a DSA member, advanced in the 13th.

What Comes Next

El-Sayed now faces former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in November, in a race that could decide control of the U.S. Senate. But the more consequential outcome has already occurred. A coalition that was theoretical five years ago — a college-town Sanders base and a Ford-era mosque geography, running the same slate under the same infrastructure — is now field-tested.

Michigan will be studied by organizers in New Jersey, Illinois, and Minnesota, where similar demographic and ideological currents run in parallel. The story on August 4 was not that a progressive won a primary. It was that the two rivers merged.

Russian state media outlet RT, through its editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan, promoted an “RT EXCLUSIVE” featuring Candace Owens thanking Vladimir Putin, Russia’s Ministry of Health, and Russian medical personnel after a member of her security team reportedly suffered a severe stroke during her June trip to Russia.

According to the account published by RT, the unnamed man underwent emergency brain surgery and later returned to the United States. The medical details were attributed to a letter from Owens that RT said it had obtained exclusively.

The segment drew additional attention after counter-extremism researcher Ryan Mauro, president of The Mauro Institute, highlighted Simonyan’s promotion of the story in an X post. Mauro cited it alongside Simonyan’s earlier description of Russian “covert projects” aimed at influencing Western audiences.

Simonyan and the “Covert Projects” Remark

The renewed focus on RT’s leadership also stems from earlier public remarks by Simonyan.

During a February 2024 appearance on Russian state television, Simonyan said Russia had built “an entire empire of covert projects” intended to work with public opinion and reach Western audiences, according to Newsweek.

The resurfaced remarks have since been cited by journalists and researchers examining RT’s English-language influence operations because they appeared to describe covert opinion-shaping efforts as an intentional strategy rather than an incidental consequence of state media coverage.

Russia’s Appeal to Western Conservatives

The Owens segment also appears to fit within a broader Russian effort to present the country as a destination for Westerners disillusioned with liberal social change.

In August 2024, Putin signed an executive order creating a simplified path to temporary residence for certain foreigners who reject what the order called the “destructive neoliberal ideological attitudes” of their home countries and identify with “traditional Russian spiritual and moral values.”

The policy allows qualifying applicants to bypass the normal residency quota and requirements to demonstrate knowledge of the Russian language, Russian history, and basic Russian law.

The decree dovetailed with an existing private project aimed at conservative Western families. In 2023, The Moscow Times reported on plans for a settlement outside Moscow marketed to conservative-minded Americans and Canadians.

The project’s own website describes American Villages in Russia as a fully private, nongovernmental initiative intended to help native English speakers “start a new life in Russia” while living alongside like-minded residents.

Past RT Controversies

Russia Today has been the subject of several past controversies and the target of federal scrutiny. In 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice announced charges against two RT employees accused of covertly funding and directing a U.S.-based media company that produced thousands of videos carrying undisclosed Russian messaging. The DOJ said the effort involved nearly $10 million and was intended to influence American audiences while concealing the source of the content.

The State Department later said RT had gone “beyond being simply a media outlet,” describing it as an actor involved in covert influence operations and intelligence-linked activity. In the same statement, the department said RT personnel, including its editor-in-chief, had coordinated directly with the Kremlin in support of Russian government objectives abroad.

U.S. Marshals arrested social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate on Saturday outside a Miami boxing venue, executing a sealed warrant tied to a dramatically expanded United Kingdom criminal case that now totals 59 charges. Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service confirmed in a statement Sunday that it has approved 38 new counts against the brothers — including additional rape, trafficking, assault, and offenses tied to indecent images of a child — covering four more alleged victims and conduct dating back to 2010.

The brothers, who built one of the largest audiences in the “manosphere” influencer scene, have denied wrongdoing throughout years of parallel proceedings. The arrests land roughly six weeks after the Tate’s completed a Kremlin-choreographed visit to Moscow that Russian opposition figures denounced as a propaganda gift to Vladimir Putin, a trip that had already drawn criticism from the brothers’ own accusers over the UK’s slow pursuit of extradition.

Charges Nearly Triple

The CPS detailed plans to prosecute Andrew Tate, 39, on seven additional counts of rape, three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and 19 charges tied to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography. Tristan Tate, 38, faces one new count of sexual assault, two of rape, and three of trafficking-related offenses.

Malcolm McHaffie, head of the CPS Special Crime Division, tied the new charges to a further evidence file from Bedfordshire Police and said they bring the total number of alleged victims to seven. He stressed that the case remains active and cautioned against “reporting, commentary or sharing of information online” that could prejudice a fair trial. The brothers previously faced 21 combined charges tied to three women under a UK arrest warrant issued in 2024, itself layered atop a separate Romanian trafficking and rape case stemming from the brothers’ late-2022 arrest.

From the Ring to Federal Custody

Video captured federal agents detaining the brothers outside Miami’s James L. Knight Center, where Andrew Tate had been scheduled to appear at a bare-knuckle boxing event. The Justice Department said the arrests were executed under standard extradition treaty procedures, though officials stopped short of detailing the sealed warrant’s specific basis.

Bedfordshire Police added that its investigators had coordinated with prosecutors and international law enforcement partners throughout the case, framing the charges as part of a broader effort against violence targeting women. The brothers are expected to appear in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida this week; their attorney has not responded to requests for comment. Florida’s attorney general had already opened a separate state inquiry into the brothers earlier this year, shortly after they first relocated from Romania to Florida.

A Kremlin Reception, Weeks Earlier

The arrest follows a June visit in which the Tate’s, dual U.S.-UK citizens, flew into Moscow during Russia’s flagship St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and were greeted at the airport with a traditional bread-and-salt ceremony, later touring Red Square and Moscow nightlife.

Though the brothers did not formally attend the forum, their reception coincided with the Kremlin’s courting of Western right-wing figures such as commentator Candace Owens, whose own SPIEF panel Crosscurrents previously found was moderated by an EU-sanctioned propagandist and staffed with Kremlin officials under U.S. Treasury sanctions.

Even inside Russia, the welcome proved divisive. Former Navalny ally Lyubov Sobol wrote that Tate was “not a guest of Russia, but of Putin,” while former political prisoner Andrei Pivovarov separately noted that Russian law would have jailed Tate for years over the same allegations he faces abroad. A prominent pro-war Russian Telegram channel went further, calling the pairing an embarrassment for the country.

The episode fits a pattern the Institute for the Study of War has tracked in its research on the Kremlin’s “cognitive warfare” doctrine: cultivating sympathetic Western messengers and staged diplomacy to project strength and shape perceptions Russia cannot achieve through material power alone.

Crosscurrents recently covered Andrew and Tristan Tate’s trip to Russia, where they filmed themselves doing what their team called “Russian army training” and shared the footage with their millions of followers.

An Unresolved Reckoning

The timing had already troubled the Tate’s accusers. As the brothers toured Moscow, lawyers representing the UK women behind the case publicly questioned why authorities were letting the pair travel freely rather than accelerating an extradition request first issued in 2024.

Weeks later, that request has hardened into a nearly tripled charge sheet and a pair of federal arrests — moving the case from Romania’s courts and Russia’s red carpet toward a Miami courtroom, and eventually, prosecutors hope, one in London.

On June 23, 2026, Tucker Carlson introduced Jordan “JD” Hall to his podcast audience as “one of the clearest writers on the internet” and a theologian exposing the corruption of American Christianity. What Carlson did not disclose: his guest had been investigated by Sidney, Montana police for the alleged strangulation of a family member, had fabricated a story about a woman that forced him into bankruptcy, and had entered a no-contest plea in a felony embezzlement case that was later dismissed after Hall fulfilled the terms of a deferred sentencing agreement.

The Record Carlson Skipped Over

Hall built his platform as founder of Pulpit & Pen, later renamed Protestia, an online publication devoted to exposing supposed liberalism in evangelical Christianity. He also served as pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Sidney, Montana and ran the Montana Daily Gazette, a far-right local news outlet. The apparatus gave him access to politicians, airwaves, and a national audience of conservative Christians. It also gave him a financial account he was later accused in court of looting.

Before his fall, Hall had already established a pattern of targeting women — and fabricating when necessary. In 2021, he published a piece in the Montana Daily Gazette headlined “Whos the Gothic Transvestite Haunting the Halls of the Montana Capitol?” The article falsely accused Adrian Jawort, a transgender Native American lobbyist, of cornering and physically intimidating a state senator.

When Jawort sued for libel, Jawort’s attorneys filed a sanctions motion alleging Hall had made threats against opposing counsel, including posting a photo showing a placard reading “Raph Graybill” among hunting trophies on his wall and stating he would treat the attorney “like a coyote, killing him in the legal process and then leaving his carcass on the fence as a warning.” Hall filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in February 2022, one day before a scheduled sanctions hearing, and eventually settled. He was required to publish a court-authored apology on the Gazette homepage admitting “the information I published about Adrian was false.” Under the settlement, Jawort was entitled to a $250,000 claim against Hall’s bankruptcy estate.

Arrested Armed, Then Accused of Assault

Three months after the libel settlement, on the night of May 11, 2022, the Sidney Police Department arrested Hall after a traffic stop. The arrest report, obtained by Religion News Service, documented that Hall tested 0.00 for alcohol but failed a field sobriety test.

Police found him in possession of a concealed Smith & Wesson M&P Shield handgun, a fixed-blade knife around his neck, a second knife in his boot, and a bag of prescription pills. He was charged with driving under the influence and carrying a concealed weapon while impaired. Hall attributed the failed sobriety test to a vitamin D deficiency and pleaded not guilty.

Less than a month later, on June 5, 2022, a second and more serious incident occurred inside the Hall family home. A Sidney Police Department report dated June 23, 2022, obtained by the Sidney Herald and corroborated by MinistryWatch and the Christian Post, documented that Hall was investigated for allegations of “strangulation of a partner or family member” and “assault with a weapon” described as a “knife/cutting instrument.”

A Fellowship Baptist Church elder told the Christian Post that Hall’s wife had reported he physically abused her and their son and kicked him out of the home. The church’s own statement cited abuse of “his wife and one of their children.” No criminal charges were filed in connection with the alleged assault. Hall denies the abuse allegations.

Over $100,000 and a Court-Ordered Apology

The church ultimately reported Hall’s financial conduct to police as well. According to court filings by Richland County Attorney Charity McLarty, Hall had misappropriated more than $100,000 in church funds over five years for personal and political use — including a gun safe, family cell phones, personal travel, and payments to staff on his own political blog. Former church treasurer Joyce Nesper testified in court that Hall used church funds for “political trips that should not have been paid for by the church,” and that she suspected his offer to pay her husband’s medical bills was intended so she “did not have the need to look at bank statements.”

In September 2024, Hall entered a nolo contendere (no contest) plea to felony embezzlement charges in Richland County District Court as part of a deferred sentencing agreement. He was ordered to pay $15,454.44 in restitution to Fellowship Baptist, issue a court-ordered apology to the congregation, report to a probation officer, abstain from drugs and alcohol, and was prohibited from owning weapons or entering bars and casinos for three years. In March 2026, Richland County District Judge Olivia Rieger dismissed the charges and sealed the case files after Hall fulfilled the agreement’s terms. Hall has publicly maintained he never pleaded guilty.

Candace Owens didn’t need to announce she was moving to Russia for national security researcher Ryan Mauro to recognize the warning signs. The conservative influencer initially billed her June 2026 trip as a family vacation—cathedral visits, tourist photos, her husband’s “fishing” trips to Russia. On February 28, the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran, hitting over 100 military targets in what the U.S. government dubbed Operation Epic Fury. The administration framed the action as necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and eliminating the threat of its ballistic missile arsenal. But across social media, a different narrative exploded into virality: the strikes weren’t about Iran at all—they were about Jeffrey Epstein.

Within hours of the operation’s announcement, X users began renaming it “Operation Epstein Fury” and “Operation Epstein Diversion.” Mock military patches bearing these names circulated widely. Videos with titles like “Operation EPSTEIN Fury” racked up millions of views. TikTok creators posted graphics declaring the operation a “distraction from the Epstein files.” The theory became so widespread that by March 1, sitting Republican Congressman Thomas Massie felt compelled to address it directly: “Bombing a country on the other side of the globe won’t make the Epstein files go away,” he posted to his 1.7 million followers on X.

This wasn’t fringe thinking confined to conspiracy forums. It was mainstream discourse, visible across every major platform, voiced by elected officials, and treated as plausible by millions. The question isn’t whether the theory is true. It’s how two entirely separate government actions became, in the public imagination, a single coordinated performance.

The Temporal Proximity Problem

The Department of Justice has been releasing millions of documents related to Epstein’s crimes since December 2025, following passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act. By late February, over 3 million pages had been disclosed, with another 3 million still withheld. Pressure was mounting for full transparency, particularly around redactions. Massie and Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna had been conducting high-profile reviews of unredacted files, naming individuals they believed warranted investigation. Trump’s name appeared repeatedly in the documents.

Then came Iran. From one perspective, the strikes represented the culmination of months of escalating tensions and diplomatic impasse over nuclear development. From another, they represented a conveniently timed spectacle arriving precisely when Epstein scrutiny was intensifying.

When does temporal proximity become evidence of causation? In the social media era, apparently immediately. The conspiracy wasn’t argued so much as declared obvious. The very act of questioning it became evidence of naivety. “Of course a president facing scandal-related pressure would launch military action. Haven’t you seen Wag the Dog?” Such posts are commonplace on X.

The Unfalsifiable Loop

What makes the theory so durable is that it’s constructed to be immune to contradiction. If Trump signs the Epstein Files Transparency Act into law, that doesn’t count as evidence against a cover-up. It becomes proof of the cover-up’s sophistication: he signed it under pressure, then created distractions to manage the fallout. If he doesn’t bomb Iran, critics accuse him of weakness. If he does, critics accuse him of distraction. Every action fits the theory.

This isn’t unique to Trump. In December 1998, President Clinton launched Operation Desert Fox against Iraq three days before the House voted to impeach him over the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Republicans immediately cried “wag the dog,” referencing the film that had premiered earlier that year about a president manufacturing a war to distract from a sex scandal. The accusation stuck, even though the operation had genuine military justifications that many argue have held up historically.

The problem is that this heuristic makes actually governing nearly impossible. Even legitimate threats get processed through the domestic scandal lens. CNN noted that the Epstein files have “spawned their own opaque subgenre of conspiracy theories” that distract from “a common pursuit of justice.” When every presidential action can be interpreted as performance art, how do citizens evaluate actual policy?

The Conspiracy as Civic Shortcut

The viral spread of “Operation Epstein Diversion” reveals something beyond this particular moment. It demonstrates how comprehensively Americans have lost faith in the possibility of straightforward government action. There’s no longer any scenario in which a president launches military strikes and the public response is, “Perhaps there were legitimate national security considerations we aren’t privy to.” That possibility has been evacuated from the discourse.

Instead, we’ve developed pattern-recognition systems that bypass the laborious work of evaluating evidence. Scandal emerges → military action follows some time later → connection assumed. The conspiracy theory becomes a cognitive shortcut, a way of feeling informed without doing the difficult work of actually understanding Iranian nuclear development, regional alliance structures, or military threat assessments.

Massie, to his credit, has been consistent. He opposed the strikes on constitutional grounds, arguing Congress must authorize war. That’s a serious institutional argument about separation of powers. But even his opposition got absorbed into the distraction narrative, transformed from constitutional objection into confirmation of the cover-up theory.

The ultimate irony is that while millions debated whether Iran was a distraction from Epstein, both stories received less serious analytical attention than they deserved. The conspiracy theory about the distraction became the actual distraction. And somewhere in that loop, the possibility of understanding what’s actually happening disappeared entirely.
