On the night of August 4, 2026, Abdul El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary — becoming the first Muslim ever nominated by a major American party for the U.S. Senate. He overcame enormous sums of spending against him, a late endorsement of Stevens by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and the alignment of nearly the entire state Democratic establishment. Most coverage has framed the result as a far-left, progressive upset.

This reading is incomplete. What happened in Michigan was the convergence of two political movements that had spent the previous decade building separate but increasingly complementary infrastructures: a far-left, Bernie Sanders-style progressive base and a Muslim political organizing network centered in Dearborn. Arguably, neither could have delivered a Senate nomination alone. Together, they did. El-Sayed didn’t cause the confluence. He is it.

Wing One: The Muslim Dearborn Base

The first current began on the factory floor in the early 20th century. In January 1914, Henry Ford announced the $5-a-day wage at his Highland Park plant, and Lebanese Muslims from the Bekaa Valley settled Dearborn’s Southend to work the Rouge Complex. The 1965 Hart-Celler Immigration Act abolished national-origin quotas and installed family reunification as the dominant admission category, growing the U.S. Muslim population from roughly 150,000 in 1965 to approximately three million today. The Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990) drove Shia refugees into Dearborn; a peak wave of Yemenis settled Hamtramck’s Polish neighborhoods; the 1991 Gulf War and the 2003 Iraq War produced 19,490 Iraqi refugees placed in Michigan by federally contracted resettlement agencies.

The political payoff arrived on a fixed schedule. In 2013, Hamtramck became the first Muslim-majority city in the United States; in 2015 it elected the first Muslim-majority city council; by 2022 the council and mayor were entirely Muslim-American. In 2018, Rashida Tlaib — a Democratic Socialists of America member endorsed by Justice Democrats — won Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. In 2020, Abraham Aiyash, a Yemeni-American from Hamtramck, won a Michigan House seat with 89.7 percent of the general vote; by 2023 he was House majority floor leader. In 2021, Abdullah Hammoud became Dearborn’s first Arab-American mayor.

Then came the Uncommitted movement, launched in late 2023 to pressure the Biden administration over its Gaza policy. In Michigan’s February 2024 Democratic presidential primary, more than 100,000 votes went to “Uncommitted.” That November, Kamala Harris’ share of the Dearborn vote collapsed from Biden’s 69 percent in 2020 to 36 percent. Trump carried Michigan.

Wing Two: The Far-Left Squad Machine

The second current is much younger and runs from a college-town uprising. On March 8, 2016, Bernie Sanders won the Michigan Democratic presidential primary 49.7 to 48.3 — despite trailing Hillary Clinton in polling by an average of 21.4 points. It was the largest polling miss of the modern primary era. Sanders swept independents 71–28, dominated Washtenaw, Ingham, and Kalamazoo counties, and turned Michigan into what FiveThirtyEight called a “major turning point.”

The infrastructure followed immediately. Kelly Collison — who had founded Michigan for Bernie in 2015 — and Sam Pernick of the Michigan Young Democrats founded Michigan for Revolution (M4R) to organize former Sanders voters inside the state party. By the February 2017 Michigan Democratic Party convention at Cobo Center, M4R had built 18 chapters, signed up more than 1,000 new party members, captured the chairmanship of the MDP Progressive Caucus, and placed more than 40 members on the state central committee.

The same year in Washington, former Sanders staff founded Justice Democrats — the recruiting apparatus that would elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush, and Jamaal Bowman. Its communications director was Waleed Shahid, a Pakistani-Muslim organizer from Arlington, Virginia.

Metro Detroit’s Democratic Socialists of America chapter, which had fallen below 700 members in 2023, has nearly doubled to 1,400 members and set a public target of 3,000 by the end of 2028. In November 2025, DSA members Denzel McCampbell and Gabriela Santiago-Romero won two Detroit City Council seats. In February 2026, the Michigan Working Families Party announced a coordinated statewide slate under state director Branden Snyder — the former founder of Detroit Action — telling Michigan Advance the WFP was executing a “10-year plan to co-govern” modeled on the New York coalition that had just elected Zohran Mamdani.

The Man Who Is Both

El-Sayed’s biography reads like the two currents braided into a single person. He was born October 31, 1984, in Rochester Hills — the Detroit suburb where the Islamic Association of Greater Detroit, had been founded six years earlier by thirty immigrant families. His father Mohamed had arrived from Egypt in 1978 on a Wayne State University engineering fellowship — the Hart-Celler pathway in one biography.

At the University of Michigan, El-Sayed served as vice president of the campus Muslim Students Association. (MSA). The MSA was allegedly founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood and was among the organizations listed in a 1991 internal memorandum written by a Muslim Brotherhood member and later introduced as evidence during the Holy Land Foundation prosecution. He described the role himself in a 2012 Nation piece: “MSA of Michigan was many times named student organization of the year… we were normally at the lead of issues concerning minority student groups and religious organizations on campus.” He then married into the Tayeb family.

His father-in-law, Jukaku Tayeb, self-identifies on the Islamic Society of North America’s own website as an ISNA Founders Committee member, past president of CAIR-Michigan, current CAIR-Michigan board member, board member of the Michigan Muslim Community Council, chairman of the HUDA Free Clinic, and past president of the Islamic Association of Greater Detroit — the Rochester Hills mosque whose co-founder, Dr. Ghaus Malik, currently chairs ISNA’s Founders Committee.

These organizations are nor trivial. ISNA is listed in the 1991 Muslim Brotherhood “Explanatory Memorandum” as one of “our organizations,” a document outlining a long-term strategy of influence in North America of “civizational jihad.” The United Arab Emirates placed CAIR on a list of designated terrorist organizations in 2014. In 2025, the governors of Texas and Florida issued their own state-level designations, which CAIR challenged in federal court. In the Holy Land Foundation trial, the largest terror-financing trial in U.S. history, federal prosecutors named both ISNA and CAIR as unindicted co-conspirators linked to the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood network that supported Hamas.

In August 2015, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan appointed El-Sayed — then thirty and with no elected experience — executive director of the Detroit Health Department, providing the establishment-Democratic credential. In 2018, he ran for governor. Sanders endorsed him. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed him. Linda Sarsour headlined the #MyMuslimVote rally in Dearborn. It was the first documented moment the two wings shared a stage. In 2019, El-Sayed headlined a $10,000 fundraiser for Detroit DSA — where organizers called him “a longtime friend” and he was photographed alongside Tlaib behind a banner depicting a hand marked “DSA” choking a snake marked “capitalism.” He also insists — accurately — that he is “not technically or practically DSA.” Both statements are true.

The Convergence

By the primary’s closing week, everything each wing had built for a decade was running in the same seventy-two hours. Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez barnstormed the state with El-Sayed; the full congressional Squad endorsed him; DSA volunteers who covered their red shirts with green ones to knock doors more comfortably worked the ground game. On July 24 — the same Friday — CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad delivered the sermon at the IONA mosque in Warren, praising “mosques renting buses to take people to the polls,” while Imam Hassan Qazwini urged congregants at his Islamic Institute of America in Dearborn Heights to treat voting as a religious duty against the “pro-Israel lobby.”

The Fighting for Michigan super PAC supporting El-Sayed collected $200,000 — nearly half its total — from his father-in-law. On August 4, El-Sayed won. The same night, Sunrise Movement co-founder William Lawrence took Michigan’s 7th District primary; Working Families Party endorsee Donavan McKinney, a DSA member, advanced in the 13th.

What Comes Next

El-Sayed now faces former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in November, in a race that could decide control of the U.S. Senate. But the more consequential outcome has already occurred. A coalition that was theoretical five years ago — a college-town Sanders base and a Ford-era mosque geography, running the same slate under the same infrastructure — is now field-tested.

Michigan will be studied by organizers in New Jersey, Illinois, and Minnesota, where similar demographic and ideological currents run in parallel. The story on August 4 was not that a progressive won a primary. It was that the two rivers merged.

Russian state media outlet RT, through its editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan, promoted an “RT EXCLUSIVE” featuring Candace Owens thanking Vladimir Putin, Russia’s Ministry of Health, and Russian medical personnel after a member of her security team reportedly suffered a severe stroke during her June trip to Russia.

According to the account published by RT, the unnamed man underwent emergency brain surgery and later returned to the United States. The medical details were attributed to a letter from Owens that RT said it had obtained exclusively.

The segment drew additional attention after counter-extremism researcher Ryan Mauro, president of The Mauro Institute, highlighted Simonyan’s promotion of the story in an X post. Mauro cited it alongside Simonyan’s earlier description of Russian “covert projects” aimed at influencing Western audiences.

Simonyan and the “Covert Projects” Remark

The renewed focus on RT’s leadership also stems from earlier public remarks by Simonyan.

During a February 2024 appearance on Russian state television, Simonyan said Russia had built “an entire empire of covert projects” intended to work with public opinion and reach Western audiences, according to Newsweek.

The resurfaced remarks have since been cited by journalists and researchers examining RT’s English-language influence operations because they appeared to describe covert opinion-shaping efforts as an intentional strategy rather than an incidental consequence of state media coverage.

Russia’s Appeal to Western Conservatives

The Owens segment also appears to fit within a broader Russian effort to present the country as a destination for Westerners disillusioned with liberal social change.

In August 2024, Putin signed an executive order creating a simplified path to temporary residence for certain foreigners who reject what the order called the “destructive neoliberal ideological attitudes” of their home countries and identify with “traditional Russian spiritual and moral values.”

The policy allows qualifying applicants to bypass the normal residency quota and requirements to demonstrate knowledge of the Russian language, Russian history, and basic Russian law.

The decree dovetailed with an existing private project aimed at conservative Western families. In 2023, The Moscow Times reported on plans for a settlement outside Moscow marketed to conservative-minded Americans and Canadians.

The project’s own website describes American Villages in Russia as a fully private, nongovernmental initiative intended to help native English speakers “start a new life in Russia” while living alongside like-minded residents.

Past RT Controversies

Russia Today has been the subject of several past controversies and the target of federal scrutiny. In 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice announced charges against two RT employees accused of covertly funding and directing a U.S.-based media company that produced thousands of videos carrying undisclosed Russian messaging. The DOJ said the effort involved nearly $10 million and was intended to influence American audiences while concealing the source of the content.

The State Department later said RT had gone “beyond being simply a media outlet,” describing it as an actor involved in covert influence operations and intelligence-linked activity. In the same statement, the department said RT personnel, including its editor-in-chief, had coordinated directly with the Kremlin in support of Russian government objectives abroad.

U.S. Marshals arrested social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate on Saturday outside a Miami boxing venue, executing a sealed warrant tied to a dramatically expanded United Kingdom criminal case that now totals 59 charges. Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service confirmed in a statement Sunday that it has approved 38 new counts against the brothers — including additional rape, trafficking, assault, and offenses tied to indecent images of a child — covering four more alleged victims and conduct dating back to 2010.

The brothers, who built one of the largest audiences in the “manosphere” influencer scene, have denied wrongdoing throughout years of parallel proceedings. The arrests land roughly six weeks after the Tate’s completed a Kremlin-choreographed visit to Moscow that Russian opposition figures denounced as a propaganda gift to Vladimir Putin, a trip that had already drawn criticism from the brothers’ own accusers over the UK’s slow pursuit of extradition.

The CPS detailed plans to prosecute Andrew Tate, 39, on seven additional counts of rape, three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and 19 charges tied to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography. Tristan Tate, 38, faces one new count of sexual assault, two of rape, and three of trafficking-related offenses.

Malcolm McHaffie, head of the CPS Special Crime Division, tied the new charges to a further evidence file from Bedfordshire Police and said they bring the total number of alleged victims to seven. He stressed that the case remains active and cautioned against “reporting, commentary or sharing of information online” that could prejudice a fair trial. The brothers previously faced 21 combined charges tied to three women under a UK arrest warrant issued in 2024, itself layered atop a separate Romanian trafficking and rape case stemming from the brothers’ late-2022 arrest.

From the Ring to Federal Custody

Video captured federal agents detaining the brothers outside Miami’s James L. Knight Center, where Andrew Tate had been scheduled to appear at a bare-knuckle boxing event. Even inside Russia, the welcome proved divisive. Former Navalny ally Lyubov Sobol wrote that Tate was “not a guest of Russia, but of Putin,” while former political prisoner Andrei Pivovarov separately noted that Russian law would have jailed Tate for years over the same allegations he faces abroad. A prominent pro-war Russian Telegram channel went further, calling the pairing an embarrassment for the country.

The episode fits a pattern the Institute for the Study of War has tracked in its research on the Kremlin’s “cognitive warfare” doctrine: cultivating sympathetic Western messengers and staged diplomacy to project strength and shape perceptions Russia cannot achieve through material power alone.

Crosscurrents recently covered Andrew and Tristan Tate’s trip to Russia, where they filmed themselves doing what their team called “Russian army training” and shared the footage with their millions of followers.

An Unresolved Reckoning

The timing had already troubled the Tate’s accusers. As the brothers toured Moscow, lawyers representing the UK women behind the case publicly questioned why authorities were letting the pair travel freely rather than accelerating an extradition request first issued in 2024.

Weeks later, that request has hardened into a nearly tripled charge sheet and a pair of federal arrests — moving the case from Romania’s courts and Russia’s red carpet toward a Miami courtroom, and eventually, prosecutors hope, one in London.

On June 23, 2026, Tucker Carlson introduced Jordan “JD” Hall to his podcast audience as “one of the clearest writers on the internet” and a theologian exposing the corruption of American Christianity. What Carlson did not disclose: his guest had been investigated by Sidney, Montana police for the alleged strangulation of a family member, had fabricated a story about a woman that forced him into bankruptcy, and had entered a no-contest plea in a felony embezzlement case that was later dismissed after Hall fulfilled the terms of a deferred sentencing agreement.

The Record Carlson Skipped Over

Hall built his platform as founder of Pulpit & Pen, later renamed Protestia, an online publication devoted to exposing supposed liberalism in evangelical Christianity. He also served as pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Sidney, Montana and ran the Montana Daily Gazette, a far-right local news outlet. The apparatus gave him access to politicians, airwaves, and a national audience of conservative Christians. It also gave him a financial account he was later accused in court of looting.

Before his fall, Hall had already established a pattern of targeting women — and fabricating when necessary. In 2021, he published a piece in the Montana Daily Gazette headlined “Whos the Gothic Transvestite Haunting the Halls of the Montana Capitol?” The article falsely accused Adrian Jawort, a transgender Native American lobbyist, of cornering and physically intimidating a state senator.

When Jawort sued for libel, Jawort’s attorneys filed a sanctions motion alleging Hall had made threats against opposing counsel, including posting a photo showing a placard reading “Raph Graybill” among hunting trophies on his wall and stating he would treat the attorney “like a coyote, killing him in the legal process and then leaving his carcass on the fence as a warning.” Hall filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in February 2022, one day before a scheduled sanctions hearing, and eventually settled. He was required to publish a court-authored apology on the Gazette homepage admitting “the information I published about Adrian was false.” Under the settlement, Jawort was entitled to a $250,000 claim against Hall’s bankruptcy estate.

Arrested Armed, Then Accused of Assault

Three months after the libel settlement, on the night of May 11, 2022, the Sidney Police Department arrested Hall after a traffic stop. The arrest report, obtained by Religion News Service, documented that Hall tested 0.00 for alcohol but failed a field sobriety test.

Police found him in possession of a concealed Smith & Wesson M&P Shield handgun, a fixed-blade knife around his neck, a second knife in his boot, and a bag of prescription pills. He was charged with driving under the influence and carrying a concealed weapon while impaired. Hall attributed the failed sobriety test to a vitamin D deficiency and pleaded not guilty.

Less than a month later, on June 5, 2022, a second and more serious incident occurred inside the Hall family home. A Sidney Police Department report dated June 23, 2022, obtained by the Sidney Herald and corroborated by MinistryWatch and the Christian Post, documented that Hall was investigated for allegations of “strangulation of a partner or family member” and “assault with a weapon” described as a “knife/cutting instrument.”

A Fellowship Baptist Church elder told the Christian Post that Hall’s wife had reported he physically abused her and their son and kicked him out of the home. The church’s own statement cited abuse of “his wife and one of their children.” No criminal charges were filed in connection with the alleged assault. Hall denies the abuse allegations.

Over $100,000 and a Court-Ordered Apology

The church ultimately reported Hall’s financial conduct to police as well. According to court filings by Richland County Attorney Charity McLarty, Hall had misappropriated more than $100,000 in church funds over five years for personal and political use — including a gun safe, family cell phones, personal travel, and payments to staff on his own political blog. Former church treasurer Joyce Nesper testified in court that Hall used church funds for “political trips that should not have been paid for by the church,” and that she suspected his offer to pay her husband’s medical bills was intended so she “did not have the need to look at bank statements.”

In September 2024, Hall entered a nolo contendere (no contest) plea to felony embezzlement charges in Richland County District Court as part of a deferred sentencing agreement. He was ordered to pay $15,454.44 in restitution to Fellowship Baptist, issue a court-ordered apology to the congregation, report to a probation officer, abstain from drugs and alcohol, and was prohibited from owning weapons or entering bars and casinos for three years. In March 2026, Richland County District Judge Olivia Rieger dismissed the charges and sealed the case files after Hall fulfilled the agreement’s terms. Hall has publicly maintained he never pleaded guilty.

Candace Owens didn’t need to announce she was moving to Russia for national security researcher Ryan Mauro to recognize the warning signs. The conservative influencer initially billed her June 2026 trip as a family vacation—cathedral visits, tourist photos, her husband’s “fishing” trips to Russia. That cover story collapsed when Mauro revealed she was actually a scheduled speaker at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russia’s state-managed answer to Davos.

In a thread that drew immediate attention, Mauro asked whether Putin would award Owens the Order of Friendship at the forum—Russia’s medal for foreigners who strengthen ties with the Kremlin. Whether his hunch proves correct or not, the pattern was unmistakable: Russia’s economy shrank 0.2 percent in early 2026, yet the Kremlin positioned an American mother’s Moscow vacation as evidence the West has been lying about Russian decline and potentially laid groundwork for permanent relocation of a Western influencer with 35 million followers.

The Researcher Who Connected the Dots

Before Owens departed, she told her audience she planned to tour Russian Orthodox cathedrals with her husband George Farmer, who she claimed “regularly travels to Russia to go fishing.” She added she “might” arrange a meeting with Russian philosopher Alexander Dugin, the neo-Eurasianist ideologue known as “Putin’s brain.”

Mauro, president of the Mauro Institute specializing in counter-extremism, exposed the deception by publishing screenshots showing Owens as a scheduled SPIEF panelist. His investigation raised a more alarming question: was this trip reconnaissance for permanent relocation? The forum—which once hosted Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, and Goldman Sachs executives—has transformed into what analysts call a showcase for “anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists” since Russia’s 2022 Ukraine invasion.

The Propaganda Value of an Influencer

Russia doesn’t invite personalities like Owens for their business acumen or diplomatic gravitas. It invites them for translation — the ability to render Kremlin talking points in the language of American cultural grievance.

Owens delivered exactly that. She posted from Moscow’s Red Square that the city was “incredibly beautiful and orderly,” contradicting “media descriptions.” She reportedly posted that gas and groceries are cheaper in Russia and accused Western media of lying. At SPIEF, she questioned U.S. support for Ukraine, telling reporters “Americans are getting tired of funding and not knowing where the money is going.” Russian state media amplified every statement.

Mauro later documented Owens appearing on Russian propaganda television preaching that following Russia’s spiritual example “is America’s only salvation.”

The Residency Pathway Russia Built

The “family vacation” framing obscures the infrastructure Russia has built to convert cultural tourism into permanent relocation. In August 2024, Vladimir Putin signed a decree creating a pathway for foreigners who embrace “traditional Russian spiritual and moral values, ” those opposing what Moscow calls the “destructive neoliberal ideological agenda” of the West.

Eligible applicants receive single-entry visas, enter Russia, then apply for temporary residence without quota restrictions and without demonstrating Russian language proficiency, knowledge of Russian history, or understanding of Russian law. The United States appears on the approved list. By September 2024, Russia’s government published a roster of 52 countries deemed to be pursuing that “destructive agenda”—including every NATO member and democratic U.S. ally.

At SPIEF, Russian architect Anton Glikin revealed he’s designing a settlement in Nizhny Novgorod for 450 Western immigrants arriving under the “shared values visa.” This isn’t abstract policy, it’s operational infrastructure potentially suited to figures like Owens.

The Justice Department’s Warning

Russia’s influence ecosystem doesn’t require formal coordination with every personality it amplifies. In September 2024, the Justice Department seized 32 internet domains used in Kremlin-directed foreign malign influence campaigns designed to “reduce international support for Ukraine, bolster pro-Russian policies and interests, and influence voters in U.S. and foreign elections.”

Attorney General Merrick Garland stated the operations were directed by Putin’s inner circle, including First Deputy Chief of Staff Sergei Kiriyenko. The campaigns used cybersquatted domains mimicking legitimate news outlets, AI-generated content, fake social media profiles, and paid influencers worldwide—all designed to appear organic rather than state-sponsored.

An influencer like Owens doesn’t need direct instructions to be valuable in this ecosystem. She only needs to supply content Russian media can quote—an American Christian mother praising Moscow’s order while questioning why Washington funds Kyiv’s defense.

The Economic Reality Behind the Instagram Feed

Owens’s claims about Russian affordability collapse under scrutiny. While individual items may cost less in rubles, average annual wages tell the real story: approximately $65,000 in the United States versus roughly $12,000 in Russia, according to data cited by The Kyiv Independent. Local purchasing power remains far higher in America.

The trick isn’t showing a fake Russia — Moscow’s cathedrals are real, its metro is genuinely impressive. The trick is presenting curated Russia as the whole picture while asking American audiences to compare it against their own country’s worst headlines.

Why This Matters for American Security

As Voz journalist Park MacDougald analyzed, SPIEF functions as “a hotspot of the dirtiest Russian intelligence activities.” Putin uses it to project narratives of Russian resilience and multipolarity. That a Western influencer with 35 million followers appears as a speaker—presented as “independent” and “critical of the establishment”—provides enormous legitimizing value for Moscow.

The strategic objective isn’t necessarily Owens moving to Moscow permanently. It’s moving Russia in the imagination of her audience from enemy to potential refuge, from dictatorship threatening NATO allies to sanctuary from American “wokeness.”

That perceptual shift serves Russian foreign policy objectives. A population skeptical of defending Ukraine is a population that questions the entire post-World War II American security architecture. A population romanticizing authoritarian “order” is a population vulnerable to democratic backsliding at home.

The Broader Pattern

Owens joined a roster of Western personalities at SPIEF 2026 that CNN documented as including Steven Seagal, former UN inspector Scott Ritter (convicted of sexually harassing a minor), and Andrew Tate (self-described misogynist facing human trafficking charges).

The visit came as the U.S. Treasury has sanctioned Russia's RT network for covertly recruiting Western influencers to launder Kremlin propaganda. Tate isn't being recruited unwittingly. He's volunteering.

The Welcome Was the Message

The Tate brothers were greeted at Moscow's airport by a costumed troupe of folk singers and dancers offering bread and salt — a ceremony Russia normally reserves for visiting dignitaries. Russian business daily Kommersant reported the brothers came on a "private visit" during the week of Putin's St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, though their program was not listed as official SPIEF participation. Andrew told press: "We came to Russia because serious countries deserve to be taken seriously. I want to meet people, see how the country functions, understand how people live, and talk about it based on what I've actually seen with my own eyes."

That "content for an international audience" is the operational tell. Russia spent millions of state-broadcaster dollars producing the "Santa Putin" homophobic ad that Tate pushed to his then-3.3 million followers in December 2022. Three and a half years later, the Kremlin no longer needs to dress up the operation — it just flies the influencer in.

Weapons Training During an Active War

Western governments classify Russia as a hostile state actively waging the largest land war in Europe since 1945. The U.S. State Department advises Americans not to travel to Russia “for any reason” and warns of “wrongful detention.” A dual U.S. citizen filming automatic-weapons content in Russia — while Ukrainian drones were striking oil terminals visible from Putin’s economic forum — and labeling it “army training” is not tourism. It is propaganda. And it was broadcast, as intended, to millions of young Western men.

Putin’s “Christian Values” Sales Pitch

Tate has spent years echoing the Kremlin's framing of the Ukraine war as a defense of Christian civilization against a "Satanic" West, and told Tucker Carlson in 2023 that Putin should be credited for "curing Covid" by invading Ukraine. The pitch is aimed at young Christian men in America and Britain who feel alienated from secular liberalism.

The reality on the ground is the opposite of the sales copy: Russian forces have bombed and shelled hundreds of Ukrainian churches, Moscow has decriminalized some forms of domestic violence, and the regime persecutes evangelical and non-Moscow-Patriarchate Christians in occupied territories. The country Tate is promoting to Western Christians is invading a Christian neighbor.

Even Pro-Kremlin Russians Are Embarrassed

The Tates' presence was so awkward that pro-war Russian commentators publicly objected. Rybar, a million-subscriber pro-war Telegram channel, called the brothers a "bad pick" and their visit "embarrassing." Yekaterina Mizulina, who heads the Kremlin-aligned Safe Internet League, noted the Tates are accused in three countries of "forming an organized criminal group for human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation and sexual violence, including against children" — and asked how Russia "will look after welcoming them with bread and salt."

Nationalist blogger Roman Antonovsky labeled Tate "a human trafficker, misogynist, Islamist and rapist." When the Kremlin's own warbloggers can see the optics, the operation isn't subtle. BBC Russian's report noted bluntly: "Who invited the Tates to Russia and why is not specified."

A Pattern, Not an Incident

The Tate visit fits a wider Kremlin push. American podcaster Candace Owens appeared on RT and at SPIEF; actor Steven Seagal sat on a "cultural dialogue" panel; convicted pedophile and former weapons inspector Scott Ritter attended as a pro-Kremlin commentator. Each is a recognizable voice to a different Western audience — manosphere, MAGA, anti-establishment left, conspiracy media.

The Tates bring the bloc the Kremlin most covets: tens of millions of young Western men. The brothers were free to travel only because Romanian authorities lifted their restrictions, while Britain has declined to seek extradition despite outstanding rape and human trafficking charges.

On a recent podcast appearance, Elizabeth Lane — a Georgia-born UNIFYD TV host with a years-long public record of promoting Vladimir Putin and Kremlin narratives to her 94,000 X followers — told her hosts that after being labeled a “Russian agent,” she “sent the information to a friend of mine at the FBI.” She explained: “A friend of mine is, well, worked for the FBI for the longest time and he has access to all of the databases, everything. So I was like, you know what, this is how we’re gonna do this.”

Former Green Beret Gary Melton posted the clip on June 3, 2026 and publicly informed the FBI, alleging Lane had admitted to soliciting queries on American citizens through a contact with continued access to federal databases — conduct that, if accurate, would implicate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Privacy Act, and federal theft-of-government-records statutes. “Thank God We Have Putin”

The Putin loyalty Lane is now defending in front of the FBI is not new, it runs across years of public output. In a May 29, 2024 appearance on “Gonieri,” a program on the pro-Kremlin Georgian outlet ERI Media, she described Putin as “one of the best politicians in the world” and dismissed concerns over Russian-occupied Abkhazia by asking viewers to first accept that “CIA agents like Saakashvili” were operating inside Georgia. In the same broadcast she argued the United States tries to “enslave” foreign countries through financial aid. She has compared Putin to John F. Kennedy, written “Thank God, we have Putin!”, publicly urged the Russian president “not to give up,” and posed for photos on Moscow’s Red Square.

On her UNIFYD TV channel she co-hosts a 48-minute episode dedicated to rehabilitating the Russian president for an American audience. “American presidents are puppets. They don’t run anything,” she tells viewers. “Putin actually runs the country.” She calls him “an exceptionally good politician” who “drove Russia out of poverty,” and measures his “rationality” by observing that “if he was a psychopath, Britain probably wouldn’t exist by now.” She repeats Kremlin historical revisionism nearly verbatim — “Ukraine was not even a nation” — and defends the 2022 invasion on the Kremlin’s own semantic technicality: “He didn’t, though, did he? He conducted a military operation.”

Asked about Putin's alleged assassination of opposition figure Boris Nemtsov, she answers: "In my opinion, he killed Boris Nemtsov… He's doing everything right. I mean, he's more moderate than I am." She frames the United States as the global aggressor — "Nobody ever hurts us. We go out there, we start wars, we start conflicts" — and closes the episode by equating Putin to John F. Kennedy as a leader "the globalists" fear. In December 2024, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned Dugin's Center for Geopolitical Expertise for running a Russian intelligence-funded AI deepfake operation targeting the 2024 American election. Pro-Trump investigative journalist Laura Loomer labeled Lane a "foreign disrupter" and "Russia asset" on May 17, 2026, alleging Lane had argued Russia should bomb the United Kingdom and requesting a FinCEN flag on her bank accounts.

The Bigger Picture

Lane's UNIFYD TV catalog covers Skinwalker Ranch, "weather manipulation" by the CIA, Vatican "black ops," and Princess Diana conspiracies. The platform was founded by Jason Shurka, who claims to have been recruited by a secret organization called "The Light System." That a host built on that foundation now openly describes routing American citizens' information through ex-federal personnel — while sitting across from Tucker and Buckley Carlson and Candace Owens, glorifying Putin in produced episodes, and calling on air for armed revolution — is the actual story.

The FBI's confirmation that it is "looking into" the database claim turns a podcast monologue into a federal question. Lane's defense — that she only relies on former federal personnel doing legal private-investigator work — is exactly the claim investigators will now have to evaluate.

On June 4, “conservative” commentator Candace Owens is scheduled to speak on a panel at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), an annual gathering organized under the auspices of President Vladimir Putin by the Roscongress Foundation. Owens initially described the trip as a “family vacation” before researcher Ryan Mauro revealed her speaking role, and cited what he described as "leaked documents" showing SPIEF panels operate as "recruitment pipelines" for foreign collaborators inside what he called a "state-directed soft power program."

The panel itself is moderated by an EU-sanctioned Russian propagandist and features three additional Kremlin officials sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and/or the European Union. Sharing the broader SPIEF speaker roster is Aleksandr Dugin — the Russian ideologue whose 1997 military doctrine explicitly prescribes destabilizing the United States through racial conflict and isolationism, and whose own Moscow-based organization the U.S. government sanctioned in December 2024 for running a Russian intelligence-funded AI deepfake operation targeting the 2024 American election.

A review by Crosscurrents found that SPIEF’s partner architecture is built around sanctioned Russian state power: major state banks, defense-linked financiers, Kremlin-connected executives, and technology firms Western governments have sanctioned and tied to Russia’s intelligence and war machinery. The story isn’t (just) that Owens accepted an invitation. It’s the architecture of the operation that invited her.

The Panel: “Big Family, Big Reach”

Owens’ panel is titled “Big Family, Big Reach: New Demographics and Narratives for Media Managers.” The session description openly asks how to structure the financial mechanism for ideological content distribution: “What is more effective: direct financial payments and targeted assistance or a comprehensive ecosystem?”

The moderator, Maria Sittel, was sanctioned by the EU Council in January 2026 for “information manipulation activities” targeting European audiences. The Dugin Doctrine

Aleksandr Dugin, who is also speaking at the event, is not a fringe philosopher. His 1997 book Foundations of Geopolitics was used as a textbook at the Academy of the General Staff of the Russian military, drafted with the head of the Russian Ministry of Defense’s International Department. In December 2024, OFAC sanctioned Dugin’s Center for Geopolitical Expertise (CGE) for operationalizing this doctrine — running a GRU-funded operation that used generative AI to produce deepfakes targeting the 2024 US election, distributed across a network of “at least 100 websites” designed to imitate legitimate American news outlets.

In a 2024 video surfaced by Mauro and researcher Trevor Loudon, Dugin himself defined the forum's purpose in his own words: SPIEF, he said, "will be precisely the tool — and maybe one of the most important tools — for the promotion of multipolarity" — i.e., the explicit instrument for dismantling American global influence, not an economic conference.

The Partner Architecture

Every funder of SPIEF 2026 is either a U.S., EU, or UK-sanctioned Russian state entity or it’s subsidiaries/executives are. The forum’s Title Partner VEB.RF is chaired by UK-sanctioned former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov. The co-Title Partner Rosatom is run by Alexey Likhachev, who personally oversees the Russian occupation of Europe’s largest nuclear plant at Zaporizhzhia.

The Gigapartner is Sber, whose CEO Herman Gref was designated by Treasury as a “close Putin associate.” The General Sponsor is VTB Bank, whose CEO Andrey Kostin was criminally indicted by the US Department of Justice in February 2024 for sanctions evasion and money laundering involving an Aspen mansion.

General Partner PSB Bank, designated by Treasury as Russia’s official “defense bank“ financing missile production, is run by Pyotr Fradkov — son of former SVR foreign intelligence chief Mikhail Fradkov. The forum’s Innovation Partner is Positive Technologies, which the US Treasury designated in 2021 specifically for using its conventions as “recruiting events for the FSB and GRU.”

The Civilizational Coalition

SPIEF 2026 convenes the operational form of Dugin’s tellurocratic alliance. A dedicated session implements the 20-year Russia-Iran Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty signed in January 2025. On May 2, 2026, approximately 200 attendees gathered in Columbus, Ohio for the debut of America First United, a self-described “bipartisan movement” opposing endless wars, and government corruption. The event livestreamed on Rumble and featured over two dozen speakers including political candidates running in 2026 midterm races. The conference branded itself as a defense of American principles. Its speakers told a different story.

Domain registration records show the organization was created on March 31, 2026 — just five weeks before the conference. The organization has no registered corporate entity in public databases, no LinkedIn company page, and no visible Federal Election Commission filings despite hosting multiple political candidates. The domain registration is privacy-protected, obscuring the actual registrant. A technical look into the website infrastructure yielded few additional findings, but the absence of basic legal and financial transparency for a movement hosting candidates remains striking.

The event was organized by Amy Dangerfield, an Australian former Valuetainment host, alongside Jake Shields, the former MMA fighter whose podcast platforms KKK leaders and white nationalists. The speaker roster reveals a coalition whose stated love of country sits uncomfortably alongside their stated positions.

“Christianity Is a Feminized Religion”

Pastor Joel Webbon, founder of Right Response Ministries in Austin, emerged as a central figure at the conference. In late 2025, Webbon declared: “Christians are gay. Fake and gay, to be more precise. Christianity is a feminized religion.” The statement appeared in promotional material for a Christian nationalism documentary and became a rallying cry among his followers who reject mainstream evangelicalism as insufficiently authoritarian. His positions extend further. Webbon claimed slavery was a “blessing” for Black people, arguing that living in America “should be your reparations.” He has advocated repealing the 19th Amendment, arguing women’s suffrage has caused more damage than benefit. He has interviewed Nick Fuentes, the white nationalist “Groyper” leader who attended the January 6 Capitol march as a VIP.

For a movement claiming to defend America, the speaker calls for stripping voting rights from half the population and barring religious minorities from public office.

Resentment Politics and Anti-Western Coalition

Jake Shields serves as both organizer and ideological anchor for America First United. His podcast features former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke, Patriot Front leader Thomas Rousseau, and a parade of figures whose unifying conviction is that American institutions are illegitimate. The framing throughout — that meritocracy is fake, that the country’s institutions are corrupt beyond reform, that Western civilization deserves contempt rather than defense — animates the entire conference.

Sam Parker’s presence illustrates the radicalization pipeline. In 2018, Parker ran as a Tea Party Republican challenging Mitt Romney in Utah’s Senate primary while serving as Utah State Director for Convention of States. Parker describes his radicalization as taking “about six months” on Voat, a white nationalist Reddit clone. His political evolution traces a familiar arc: legitimate frustrations with American institutions transformed into wholesale rejection of America as a project. The country didn’t fail him alone — he came to believe America itself was the failure.

The pattern repeats across the speaker list. Figures whose published views describe America as oppressive, illegitimate, or fundamentally compromised gather under a banner declaring they put America first.

The Muslim Activist and the Strange Coalition

Sameerah Munshi, the only Muslim woman formerly on Trump’s White House Religious Liberty Commission, spoke at the event and posted afterward: “Christians and Muslims can get along. The left and the right can get along. Amy Dangerfield, listed as the event host, is an Australian commentator who previously worked for Valuetainment before going independent. How a former Valuetainment host assembled this speaker roster — including nationally known extremist figures — in five weeks remains unexplained. The absence of basic corporate transparency for an organization hosting political candidates is itself a story.

An MMA fighter whose podcast hosts KKK leaders and rejects the legitimacy of American institutions. A failed Senate candidate who describes his own radicalization on a white nationalist forum. A coalition whose unifying complaint is that America, as currently constituted, is the problem.

The five-week timeline from domain registration to major conference suggests pre-existing networks simply waiting for a new vehicle. The corporate opacity, rapid mobilization, and absence of basic legal transparency indicate either well-funded backing with undisclosed donors, a rebranding of existing organizations, or coordination by experienced operators with established relationships in these movements.

The question isn’t whether this represents an organic grassroots movement. The question is who funded it, who organized it, and what readers should make of a coalition assembled this quickly, this opaquely, and with this speaker roster — packaged as American patriotism.

Republican National Committee researchers and GOP Rep. Randy Fine circulated clips this week showing left-wing Twitch streamer Hasan Piker calling the fall of the Soviet Union “one of the greatest catastrophes of the 20th century” during a debate at a Yale University event.

The comment came Tuesday during a Yale Political Union debate on the resolution “End the American Empire,” where Piker argued that after the USSR’s collapse, America had “no more big enemies left” to beat and turned “the gun on itself.” The RNC Research account wrote: “This is who Democrats are embracing.”

The remarks have intensified an already heated intra-Democratic fight over whether candidates should campaign alongside the 33-year-old Turkish-American streamer, who commands over three million followers and has become an unlikely surrogate in the 2026 midterms.
