really pulled the trigger. Despite overwhelming evidence pointing to a mentally disturbed individual, heavily linked to the the trans-furry community with a documented grudge, Owens has spent months weaving increasingly elaborate narratives involving Mossad, Israeli influence operations, shadowy cabals, Turning Point USA, and even Charlie’s own wife. When debunkers present facts, she dismisses mainstream outlets as “Mossad fronts.” Anyone questioning her theories gets branded as complicit in the cover-up.

Meanwhile, Tucker Carlson sits across from Joe Kent, the former counterterrorism chief who resigned rather than support the Iran campaign, suggesting on his podcast that maybe Israel orchestrated the whole thing to drag America into war. The implication hangs in the air: what if everything you’ve been told is a lie? Kent doesn’t quite say it. He doesn’t have to. The audience already knows. They’ve been trained to see the patterns.

This is the emerging landscape of what critics call the “conspiracist right,” a strange mirror image of progressive activism that’s taken root in the conservative podcast ecosystem. Candace Owens, Tucker Carlson, and a constellation of post-liberal Catholic influencers and Christian nationalist podcasters aren’t your grandfather’s conservatives. They’re something else entirely: a movement that’s mastered the ancient art Plato warned about 2,400 years ago in his allegory of the cave.

But here’s what most analysis gets wrong. The problem isn’t that these conspiracy theorists are deceiving their audiences. It’s that they’ve built something far more sophisticated than deception- a complete interpretive system that makes escape psychologically nearly impossible.

The Cave Wasn’t About Lies

When Plato described prisoners chained in a cave, watching shadows dance on walls and mistaking them for reality, most readers assume he was talking about deception. Someone outside the cave is manipulating the shadows, right? The prisoners are victims of a hoax.

But read it again. The prisoners aren’t stupid. They’re not gullible. They’ve actually become experts at their reality. They’ve spent years studying the shadows, noting patterns, predicting which shapes will appear next. They’ve developed elaborate theories about shadow behavior. The best among them—the ones who can forecast the shadows most accurately—are honored as wise men, the intellectuals of their world.

Plato’s insight was darker than simple deception: the prisoners’ expertise is their prison. The more skilled they become at shadow-interpretation, the more trapped they are. When someone escapes and returns to tell them about the real world outside—about three-dimensional objects and sunlight- the prisoners don’t just disbelieve him. They think he’s the deluded one. He can’t even predict the shadows anymore! His knowledge has made him incompetent by their standards.

This is the exact mechanism operating in the conspiracist right podcast ecosystem, and recent psychological research explains why it’s so resilient.

Overconfidence and the Conspiracy Mind

A 2023 study from Cornell University found something unexpected about conspiracy theorists: they’re not less intelligent than average, and they’re not more gullible. What distinguishes them is profound overconfidence in their ability to discern truth—and a dramatic overestimation of how many others agree with them.

Sound familiar? These are precisely the cognitive features of Plato’s prisoners. They’re confident they understand their reality because they’ve mastered its internal logic. They assume their interpretive framework is widely shared because, within their cave, it is widely shared.

The American Psychological Association’s research on conspiracy belief adds another dimension: these individuals aren’t driven by stupidity but by a hunger for pattern recognition and meaning-making. They’re often more engaged with current events, not less. They consume more information, not less. They’ve simply organized it all within a totalizing framework that explains everything.

This is the genius and the danger of what figures like Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson have built. They haven’t just created an alternative news source. They’ve constructed a complete hermeneutic: a method of interpretation that processes any new information in a way that reinforces the existing framework.

The Interpretive Prison

Watch how the system operates. When Charlie Kirk was killed, mainstream outlets reported basic facts: the shooter’s identity, his documented ties to the trans-furry community, his previous threats. For most observers, this information points toward a straightforward tragedy and motive.

But in the conspiracist right cave, these same facts become shadows cast by hidden manipulators. The shooter’s identity is “convenient,” exactly who they’d want you to think did it. His mental illness is suspect, possibly drugged or mind-controlled. The quick media narrative is evidence of coordination. The Manhattan Institute’s Josh Appel noted that when Owens was confronted with contradicting evidence, she dismissed The New York Post, traditionally a conservative outlet, as a “Mossad outfit.”

Notice what’s happened: the framework is unfalsifiable. Any evidence against the conspiracy becomes evidence for it, proof of how deep the deception runs. This isn’t a bug in the system; it’s the core feature. Like Plato’s prisoners who’ve mastered shadow-prediction, adherents become more confident the more they engage because the framework successfully processes everything.

James Lindsay, who coined the term, “woke right,” explains the parallel to progressive activism: both movements see the world through the lens of oppressor versus oppressed, both interpret all events through that single conflict, and both treat dissent as proof of enemy influence. The woke-left says doubters suffer from “false consciousness” requiring awakening through Critical Theory. The woke-right says doubters are “controlled opposition” or “regime shills.”

The terminology differs. The structure is identical.

Why Smart People Build Better Prisons

Here’s the disturbing part: the most sophisticated versions of these interpretive frameworks are constructed by genuinely intelligent people. Candace Owens isn’t dumb. Tucker Carlson isn’t unsophisticated. The post-liberal Catholic intellectuals theorizing about the “New Christian Right” are often doctrinally educated.

But intelligence doesn’t protect against cave-building- it makes the caves more elaborate and harder to escape. A study in Nature on echo chambers found that high-engagement, information-seeking individuals are often more vulnerable to complete epistemic closure precisely because they’ve invested more cognitive effort in constructing their framework. They’ve read more, connected more dots, built more impressive edifices of interpretation.

Think of it as intellectual sunk-cost fallacy. When someone’s spent hundreds of hours constructing an intricate understanding of how shadow X always precedes shadow Y, and shadow Y predicts shadow Z, abandoning that framework doesn’t just mean admitting error—it means all that effort was wasted. The expertise becomes worthless.

This is why deplatforming and fact-checking often fail. You’re not just asking people to reconsider a belief; you’re asking them to demolish an entire meaning-making structure and the expertise they’ve built on it. Four years after January 6th, QAnon hasn’t dissipated despite massive deplatforming efforts. It’s fractured and evolved, finding new caves to inhabit, because the interpretive method itself—the pattern-seeking, the unfalsifiable framework—remains intact.

Why the Cave Works

Plato’s cave functioned because it provided prisoners with genuine expertise and social validation. The best shadow-interpreters received honor and authority. Their skills were useful within the cave’s logic. This is crucial: the interpretive framework isn’t just explanatory—it’s functional. It gives adherents a role, a purpose, a community, and a claim to wisdom.

The conspiracist right podcast ecosystem replicates this perfectly. Listen to Candace Owens’s show or Tucker Carlson’s interviews, and you’ll notice the consistent framing: “We’re the ones willing to ask hard questions.” “We’re connecting dots the mainstream media won’t.” “We’re not afraid to speak truth.” This isn’t just ideological positioning—it’s social identity formation.

APA research confirms that conspiracy belief correlates with feelings of social alienation and powerlessness. The interpretive framework restores agency: you’re not powerless, you’re awakened. You see what others miss. Your alienation isn’t marginalization; it’s proof you’ve escaped the Matrix.

Except you haven’t. You’ve just moved from one cave to another—from mainstream consensus to an alternative hermetically sealed chamber—and mistaken the direction of travel for enlightenment.

Thanks for reading! href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/19/technology/polymarket-kalshi-prediction-markets.html">bet real money on everything from election outcomes to whether wars will escalate—is opening a bar in Washington, D.C. this Friday where patrons can drink while watching Bloomberg terminals, flight radar feeds, and prediction market odds flicker across wall-mounted screens. The venue—dubbed “The Situation Room”—promises the ambiance of a sports bar, except instead of March Madness brackets, you’ll be tracking missile strikes in real time over your IPA.

The announcement landed with perfect timing. For months, an increasingly popular internet meme has celebrated the art of “monitoring the situation”—the practice of obsessively tracking global events through a patchwork of feeds, maps, and data streams. World Monitor, a website that transforms any browser into a makeshift CIA command center, drew 2 million users in its first three weeks. The masculine urge to monitor the situation, as the original viral post put it, has found its physical embassy.

At first glance, this looks like internet culture turned into performance art, complete with craft cocktails. But the meme’s resonance reveals something substantial about how people engage with information in the current moment.

The Free Press identified something crucial beneath the joke: “a deep and unchangeable male instinct—the instinct for heroic action.” When institutions struggle to provide coherent narratives quickly enough, people build their own intelligence apparatuses. World Monitor’s creator, Elie Habib, told The Atlantic that users “feel in control” when they see “everything happening in front of them.”

This represents something more than information consumption—it’s a hunger for agency in an increasingly complex world. The monitoring impulse taps into the desire to serve, to make a difference, to be ready when called upon. It’s also evidence of people breaking out of their immediate bubbles, engaging with global events beyond their own neighborhoods and industries.

The meme works precisely because it acknowledges its own nature with humor. Most “monitoring the situation” posts are ironic, gently mocking the gap between the impulse toward engagement and the reality of refreshing Twitter feeds. “He’s not unemployed, he’s monitoring the situation” became a viral format. That self-awareness creates its peculiar appeal—the instinct is genuine even when its expression invites gentle mockery.

The practice fills a vacuum that previous generations handled differently. When information moved slowly through curated channels, citizens relied on institutions to filter signal from noise. Today’s environment offers direct access to raw data streams with more individual responsibility for interpretation. Monitoring becomes a way to stay oriented in fast-moving events.

Polymarket’s situation room makes this dynamic literal and social. Prediction markets already turned current events into trackable data; now you can discuss unfolding situations while drinking with others who share the interest. The venue transforms what’s often a solitary activity into communal engagement.

The question is what monitoring actually produces. You can watch oil prices and missile trajectories in real time, though that provides information rather than necessarily understanding. Habib himself admitted that what he built is fundamentally “a noise machine.” The challenge is converting access to information into genuine comprehension—and converting the desire to serve into meaningful action beyond observation.

What’s clear is that monitoring reflects genuine engagement with consequential events. People are paying attention to global developments, trying to make sense of complexity, looking beyond their immediate concerns. The instinct driving this—to understand, to be prepared, to potentially contribute—is fundamentally sound even when its expression involves refreshing feeds and watching flight trackers.

The phenomenon reveals something worth noting: the instinct for heroic action doesn’t disappear just because clear outlets for it become scarce. Previous generations channeled similar impulses through volunteer fire departments, local civic organizations, and community service groups that turned awareness into participation. The monitoring meme captures what happens when the instinct remains but the pathways from observation to action have atrophied. People stay perpetually ready, scanning for the moment when their preparation might matter.

Polymarket’s situation room will likely succeed because it addresses a real appetite: the desire to engage with the world alongside others doing the same. Whether it becomes merely another form of entertainment consumption or something that reconnects people to meaningful civic participation remains to be seen. The instinct is admirable. The question is whether we can rebuild the structures that historically gave it somewhere worthwhile to go.

Thanks for reading! supporters feel “betrayed” by the Iran war. Tucker Carlson called it a catastrophic mistake. Megyn Kelly denounced it. Tim Dillon sounds resigned to watching America stumble into another Middle East quagmire. These are the voices credited with delivering Trump’s 2024 victory, particularly among young men who don’t watch cable news but do listen to three-hour podcast conversations.

Here’s what makes their current moment fascinating: they’re discovering that influence and control are not the same thing.

Share

The Numbers Tell a Different Story

An NBC News poll taken after the Iran strikes found that 77 percent of Republicans support the military action. Among self-described MAGA Republicans, support climbs to 90 percent. Meanwhile, the podcasters who supposedly shaped this coalition are either criticizing the policy or carefully hedging their commentary. The gap between what the influencers are saying and what their audiences believe suggests something worth examining about how political movements actually work.

The conventional narrative about 2024 treated these podcasters as kingmakers. Trump’s three-hour Rogan interview got over 50 million views. The conclusion seemed obvious: these podcasters didn’t just amplify Trump’s message; they translated it into language that resonated with younger audiences skeptical of establishment media.

But translation is not the same as authorship. What we’re seeing now is the difference between helping someone win and determining what they do after winning.

Moods, Not Policies

These podcasters didn’t convert their audiences to a detailed foreign policy platform. They created an emotional and cultural framework around Trump as the anti-establishment outsider who rejected forever wars and Washington consensus. The specific policy content mattered less than the posture. Trump represented skepticism toward institutions, rejection of expert pieties, and a willingness to say things that made coastal elites uncomfortable.

That’s a powerful electoral coalition. It’s a terrible governing blueprint.

The problem emerges when podcast-cultivated sentiment encounters actual governing decisions. Rogan can spend three hours exploring ideas without ever committing to a specific position. Dillon’s appeal is his contempt for everyone involved in every situation. These are entertainment formats optimized for engagement, not policy coherence. They create audiences skilled at recognizing hypocrisy and suspicious of official narratives, but not necessarily equipped with detailed foreign policy frameworks.

When Trump decided to strike Iran, he didn’t violate any specific promise these podcasters had extracted from him. He violated the mood they’d cultivated around him. But moods are interpretable. Strikes can be framed as “decisively ending a threat” rather than “starting a forever war.” The same action reads differently depending on whose editorial voice is narrating it.

Who’s Really Listening?

And here’s where the polling becomes instructive. Most Republicans are apparently comfortable with that alternative framing. They heard the same anti-war rhetoric during the campaign, received the same podcast-mediated messaging, and still support the strikes at overwhelming levels. Either the podcasters failed to actually convince their audiences of the foreign policy views they claimed to hold, or their audiences never tuned in for foreign policy content in the first place.

The more likely explanation is simpler. These audiences developed parasocial relationships with Trump himself, not with any particular ideological framework. The podcasters facilitated the introduction, but once the relationship formed, their mediation became optional. When Trump says Iran posed an imminent threat, his supporters believe Trump, not the podcasters questioning that assessment.

This isn’t unique to the podcast ecosystem. Movement intellectuals regularly discover they don’t control the movements they helped build. What distinguishes the podcast era is the speed and visibility of the divergence. Previous generations of movement intellectuals could maintain illusions of influence longer because their audiences didn’t have real-time polling data. Now we can watch as Rogan expresses concern about Iran while his listeners scroll past to affirm their support for Trump’s decision.

The Limits of Parasocial Power

What’s already clear is what this episode reveals about influence in the podcast age. receiving geopolitical analysis from a man who believes the Illuminati runs the world and that Hannibal Barca—one of antiquity's most documented military commanders—<a Yale-educated, Beijing-based educator who runs a YouTube channel called “Predictive History”—had made three predictions in a 2024 lecture: Donald Trump would return to the presidency, he would initiate conflict with Iran, and the United States would lose. Two had come true. The internet declared him a prophet.

Within days, a Canadian teacher at a private high school in Beijing—someone whose YouTube lectures argue that Freemasons and Jesuits secretly control global events—had been transformed into one of America’s most viral foreign policy analysts. Major outlets profiled him. Influencers with millions of followers platformed him. His conspiracy-laden lectures were treated as serious strategic thinking.

The question isn’t whether his predictions were accurate. It’s how someone peddling theories about shadowy secret societies became treated as a credible authority—and what the amplification machinery that made it happen reveals about modern information warfare.

Share

The Conspiracy Theorist as Analyst

In his “Secret History” lecture series—the same YouTube channel that brought you his Iran predictions—Jiang lays out an elaborate conspiratorial worldview. Freemasons and Jesuits conspire to control global events. Secret societies pull the strings behind major geopolitical developments. Hidden hands orchestrate what appears to be organic political movements.

When Jiang looks at geopolitical events, he sees coordinated plots by shadowy cabals rather than the messy interplay of institutional interests, domestic politics, and strategic miscalculation that tends to characterize actual international relations.

His intellectual influences are revealing. Jiang publicly declared that Alexander Dugin is “the world’s greatest geopolitical strategist.” Dugin is the Russian ultranationalist philosopher whose 1997 book Foundations of Geopolitics explicitly advocates “introducing geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements—extremist, racist, and sectarian groups.” The book is taught at Russia’s General Staff Academy as a framework for undermining Western democracies.
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://x.com/xueqinjiang/status/1950903632620093644","full_text":"@truthtracker_ Thank you! Created in Australia but claiming Beijing origins, it generated nearly 1.8 million views in the first week of the Iran conflict. The account was verified in March 2026—curious timing for an account whose entire purpose is amplifying a single conspiracy theorist’s lectures.

Social media listening tools confirm what happened next. The keyword “Jiang Xueqin” exploded in March 2026—coinciding precisely with the start of American military operations. In the first 11 days of the month alone, his name appeared in 131,400 posts generating 1.8 million engagements. Jiang’s lecture was recorded in 2024. It sat relatively dormant for over a year. Then, the moment American military operations began, his content went supernova.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Data confirms the top influencers driving this surge: Clash Report, George Galloway, and Jackson Hinkle’s Legitimate Targets podcast. Not accuracy. Infrastructure.

What The Predictions Actually Were

Predicting Trump might return to office in 2024 wasn’t exactly going out on a limb. He was leading in polls for months and remained the dominant figure in Republican politics. Predicting potential conflict with Iran? Tensions have been building for decades. The possibility of military conflict has been discussed in foreign policy circles since the 1979 revolution.

The third prediction—that America would lose—remains speculative, drawing heavily on Vietnam analogies. The base rate for these kinds of predictions is quite high. If you predict major geopolitical tensions will escalate and conflicts will be difficult, you’ll be right fairly often simply because that describes most international crises.

The Five-Message Campaign

The layered architecture produced content promoting five core messages to different audiences: The U.S. is losing. American soldiers are dying for elite interests. Civilians are being killed. The war represents religious extremism. America will be humiliated like Vietnam. Together they created a narrative ecosystem designed to demoralize American audiences and fracture political coalitions—anti-war progressives, isolationist conservatives, Muslim audiences worldwide, anti-establishment communities.

Modern influence operations don’t require every participant to be a conscious conspirator. A Beijing educator genuinely believes his conspiracy theories. A Russian philosopher sees geopolitical advantage. An American influencer gains followers. Academic leftists find ideological confirmation. Bot-like networks inflate metrics to trigger algorithmic promotion. Each has different motivations; together they create a self-reinforcing machine.

What We’re Actually Watching

The Jiang phenomenon reveals how easy it is to manufacture viral authority when you combine surface credentials, conspiratorial content that naturally aligns with state propaganda narratives, and sophisticated amplification infrastructure. Someone who denies Hannibal Barca existed and believes the Illuminati controls global events isn’t doing rigorous analysis—yet millions of people treated him as a credible authority.

The prophecy machine doesn’t run on accuracy. It runs on exploitation of how information spreads in fragmented media ecosystems where verification mechanisms have collapsed.

Thanks for reading! activist best known for getting kicked out of the UK over his criticism of China and allegedly being deported from America for jokes about moving into Billie Eilish’s mansion.

Within 90 minutes, Donald Trump was on the phone with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. By sunrise, five Iranian women’s soccer players who’d fled their team handlers in Australia had been granted humanitarian visas. The rest of their teammates were offered the same protection.

This is not how diplomatic rescue operations are supposed to work. But increasingly, it’s how they do work, a strange alchemy where memes meet geopolitics, where the world’s most powerful person scrolls Truth Social at 2 AM, and where a professional provocateur’s post can trigger international phone calls that save lives.

The Architecture of Accidental Diplomacy

Drew Pavlou is what happens when you give a political science student Wi-Fi and no fear of consequences. When five members of Iran’s women’s soccer team broke free from their minders at their Gold Coast hotel after their Asian Cup elimination, Pavlou posted about it with characteristic urgency. The players had refused to sing Iran’s national anthem during the tournament, an act Iranian state television called treason. With the US and Iran now at war following strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, returning home meant facing a regime that treats anthem protests as capital offenses.

Fifteen minutes after Pavlou’s post, Trump reposted it with one word—”ASYLUM!”—and threatened that America would take the players if Australia wouldn’t. Then he picked up the phone.

Here’s the strange part: the Australian government had already been working the problem. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke was in Brisbane with the five players in police protection before Trump’s call. But the president’s middle-of-the-night intervention created public accountability and international attention that may have accelerated everything, or simply broadcast what was already happening.

We may never know which. What we do know is that five women who would have faced imprisonment or worse are now safe.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Post from President Donald J. Trump.

When Chaos Produces Grace

The internet is mostly garbage. Most activism is performance. Most viral moments achieve nothing beyond temporary dopamine hits and tribal signaling. But occasionally—just occasionally—the signal breaks through the noise with such force that it creates real-world consequences.

Why does this pattern feels both encouraging and deeply unsettling? Five lives are different because someone posted, someone with power saw it, and action followed. Traditional diplomatic architecture wasn’t built for outcomes that depend on which posts penetrate presidential consciousness at which hours, or whether an online provocateur’s viral moment overshadows the quiet work of bureaucrats already solving the problem.

We’ve built a system where humanitarian response depends partly on algorithmic lottery. The most sophisticated communications apparatus in human history routes crisis information through platforms designed to maximize engagement, not accuracy or importance. When those incentives occasionally align with genuine need, we get outcomes like this one. When they don’t, we get conspiracy theories driving congressional hearings.

The Iranian women’s soccer team case appears to be the real thing. Five players showed courage by refusing to sing their anthem, faced genuine danger, and found safety through a bizarre chain of social media and diplomatic intervention. But the infrastructure that delivered this outcome is the same infrastructure that amplifies nonsense daily.

That’s the Asylum in miniature, a space where the tools of chaos occasionally, accidentally, produce moments of grace. You can’t systematize grace. You can’t build policy around hoping the algorithm surfaces real crises to people with power to act. But you also can’t dismiss the fact that, sometimes, it actually works.

Five women are safe today partly because someone posted, and someone saw it, and someone acted. In the Asylum, sometimes that’s as close to a miracle as we get.

Thanks for reading! Under torture, he confessed to spreading an ointment on his skin that transformed him into a wolf, then hunting and eating the children. He was burned at the stake.

The charges sound absurd now, but authorities at the time took werewolfery seriously enough to execute hundreds of people across Europe between 1520 and 1630. Courts called physicians to testify about whether Satan could alter bodily humors to cause transformation. Grand judges wrote treatises on demonic possession. In 1598 alone, one zealous prosecutor in eastern France handed down 17 death sentences for werewolf-related charges.

The last gasps of this panic came in 1692, when an 80-year-old man in Livonia named Thiess told a court he was a werewolf who entered Hell three times yearly to battle witches and ensure good harvests. He wasn’t executed. He was laughed at, convicted of practicing folk magic, and banished. By then, educated Europeans had stopped believing humans could transform into animals.

Fast forward to 2026. Teenagers in Buenos Aires gather in public parks wearing animal masks, running on all fours, and claiming to identify as dogs and foxes. The response isn’t (thankfully) execution or even psychiatric intervention. It’s bemused news coverage and some confused parents asking psychologists whether they should worry.

Share

When Animal Identity Was Military Technology

The medieval panic over lycanthropy obscures a longer history of cultures treating animal transformation not as delusion but as valuable capability.

Norse berserkers were elite warriors who wore bear skins and reportedly fought in trance states. The Old Norse term “berserkr” translates roughly to “bear shirt.” Historical accounts describe them entering battle frenzies where they howled, bit their shields, and seemed impervious to pain. Whether they literally believed they became bears or understood it as psychological preparation for combat remains debated, but the practice was institutionalized enough that berserkers served as royal bodyguards and shock troops.

Shamanic traditions across Siberia, the Americas, and Africa treated animal transformation as spiritual technology. Practitioners wore animal skins, adopted animal movements, and claimed to channel animal spirits for healing, prophecy, or communication with the dead. These weren’t fringe practices. They were central religious technologies in functioning societies.

The difference between a medieval werewolf burned at the stake and a respected shaman wearing a wolf skin wasn’t the behavior. It was whether the surrounding culture had a script that made the behavior legible and useful.

The Psychiatric View

Modern medicine has a term for people who believe they’re transforming into animals. Clinical lycanthropy, documented in psychiatric literature since the 1850s, describes patients who experience delusional beliefs about animal transformation. It’s rare enough that fewer than 50 cases were reported between 1852 and 2020.

The condition typically appears alongside schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or psychotic depression. Patients report seeing their teeth lengthen in mirrors, feeling their bodies reshape, or experiencing overwhelming urges to walk on all fours and eat raw meat. Treatment usually involves antipsychotics, and symptoms often resolve.

But here’s what’s interesting. Researchers studying clinical lycanthropy note that cultural context matters enormously. The disorder appears in regions where wolves carry symbolic weight, either as representations of evil or as noble predators. How you perceive wolves affects whether you might develop the delusion. And in the handful of documented cases, many patients retained some awareness that they were human even while experiencing the transformation belief.

This suggests something more complicated than simple pathology. The brain’s sense of bodily self is surprisingly flexible. Under the right neurological conditions or with the right cultural scaffolding, the line between human and animal identity becomes negotiable.

The Accountability Gap

So why did 16th-century France execute Gilles Garnier while 21st-century Argentina shrugs at teenagers in dog masks?

We like to think it’s because we’ve become more enlightened. The better explanation might be that we’ve lost the ability to take claims about the self seriously at all.

Medieval Europeans believed human nature was real and fixed, which made claims of transformation either miraculous or demonic. Either way, they mattered. Modern therapeutic culture treats identity as essentially liquid and self-determined. If identity is whatever you say it is, then no identity claim can be alarming. A teenager who says she’s a dog is doing exactly what we’ve taught her to do: exploring, expressing, finding herself.

The problem is that this framework makes it nearly impossible to distinguish between healthy experimentation and something going wrong. The psychologist quoted in the original article said it only becomes concerning “when it turns into a deeply rooted belief.” But we’ve spent two decades telling young people that deeply held beliefs about identity are sacred and unchallengeable. At what point does “I identify as a dog” cross from exploration to fixation? And who’s authorized to make that call without being accused of invalidating someone’s lived experience?

Medieval Europeans probably burned too many people. But at least they had a framework for saying “this has gone too far.” We’ve dismantled that framework without building a replacement. So we get teenagers in dog masks gathering in public parks, and the most sophisticated thing we can say is that it’s probably fine unless it becomes not fine, and we’ll know it when we see it, maybe.

Thanks for reading! he posted to his 1.7 million followers on X.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Source

This wasn’t fringe thinking confined to conspiracy forums. It was mainstream discourse, visible across every major platform, voiced by elected officials, and treated as plausible by millions. The question isn’t whether the theory is true. It’s how two entirely separate government actions became, in the public imagination, a single coordinated performance.

The Temporal Proximity Problem

The Department of Justice has been releasing millions of documents related to Epstein’s crimes since December 2025, following passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act. By late February, over 3 million pages had been disclosed, with another 3 million still withheld. Pressure was mounting for full transparency, particularly around redactions. Massie and Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna had been conducting high-profile reviews of unredacted files, naming individuals they believed warranted investigation. Trump’s name appeared repeatedly in the documents.

Then came Iran. From one perspective, the strikes represented the culmination of months of escalating tensions and diplomatic impasse over nuclear development. From another, they represented a conveniently timed spectacle arriving precisely when Epstein scrutiny was intensifying.

When does temporal proximity become evidence of causation? In the social media era, apparently immediately. The conspiracy wasn’t argued so much as declared obvious. The very act of questioning it became evidence of naivety. “Of course a president facing scandal-related pressure would launch military action. Haven’t you seen Wag the Dog?” Such posts are commonplace on X.

The Unfalsifiable Loop

What makes the theory so durable is that it’s constructed to be immune to contradiction. If Trump signs the Epstein Files Transparency Act into law, that doesn’t count as evidence against a cover-up. It becomes proof of the cover-up’s sophistication: he signed it under pressure, then created distractions to manage the fallout. If he doesn’t bomb Iran, critics accuse him of weakness. If he does, critics accuse him of distraction. Every action fits the theory.

This isn’t unique to Trump. In December 1998, President Clinton launched Operation Desert Fox against Iraq three days before the House voted to impeach him over the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Republicans immediately cried “wag the dog,” referencing the film that had premiered earlier that year about a president manufacturing a war to distract from a sex scandal. The accusation stuck, even though the operation had genuine military justifications that many argue have held up historically.

The problem is that this heuristic makes actually governing nearly impossible. Even legitimate threats get processed through the domestic scandal lens. CNN noted that the Epstein files have “spawned their own opaque subgenre of conspiracy theories” that distract from “a common pursuit of justice.” When every presidential action can be interpreted as performance art, how do citizens evaluate actual policy?

The Conspiracy as Civic Shortcut

The viral spread of “Operation Epstein Diversion” reveals something beyond this particular moment. It demonstrates how comprehensively Americans have lost faith in the possibility of straightforward government action. There’s no longer any scenario in which a president launches military strikes and the public response is, “Perhaps there were legitimate national security considerations we aren’t privy to.” That possibility has been evacuated from the discourse.

Instead, we’ve developed pattern-recognition systems that bypass the laborious work of evaluating evidence. Scandal emerges → military action follows some time later → connection assumed. The conspiracy theory becomes a cognitive shortcut, a way of feeling informed without doing the difficult work of actually understanding Iranian nuclear development, regional alliance structures, or military threat assessments.

Massie, to his credit, has been consistent. He opposed the strikes on constitutional grounds, arguing Congress must authorize war. That’s a serious institutional argument about separation of powers. But even his opposition got absorbed into the distraction narrative, transformed from constitutional objection into confirmation of the cover-up theory.

The ultimate irony is that while millions debated whether Iran was a distraction from Epstein, both stories received less serious analytical attention than they deserved. The conspiracy theory about the distraction became the actual distraction. And somewhere in that loop, the possibility of understanding what’s actually happening disappeared entirely.

Thanks for reading! examining Erika Kirk—the widow of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated five months ago. The timing wasn’t coincidental: Erika Kirk was scheduled to attend Tuesday’s State of the Union as President Trump’s guest. The trailer dropped precisely when it would hijack that moment.

This is what professionalized conspiracy content looks like. Not random accusations, but a carefully constructed media product with all the aesthetic markers of legitimate journalism—teaser trailers, dramatic music, episode structure, the language of “investigation.” The trailer opens with footage of Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University, transitions to clips of Erika following his death, and ends with an image of her wearing a crown.

When asked about backlash from conservative figures including Ben Shapiro and Meghan McCain, an Owens spokesperson told the New York Post: “There isn’t any backlash outside of the Zionist bubble — which has no influence.” This reveals a sophisticated understanding of fragmented media ecosystems. Owens’ revenue doesn’t come from Shapiro’s audience. Criticism from outside her subscriber base isn’t a problem, it’s confirmation she’s onto something.

The economics are straightforward. YouTube’s algorithm rewards watch time, and serialized content keeps viewers returning. Research from NYU found that monetized conspiracy channels generate nearly four times the views of demonetized ones. An investigation into a prominent widow, stretched across multiple episodes promising revelations, creates exactly the engagement pattern that maximizes ad revenue and subscriber growth.

Owens and Erika Kirk met in December for a 4.5-hour conversation intended to resolve their dispute. Owens emerged saying she stood by all her previous claims. The incentive structure explains why: backing down would mean admitting months of content was baseless, potentially alienating an audience invested in the narrative. Doubling down meant continued relevance and revenue.

The innovation isn’t the conspiracy theory itself—people have always spun wild tales about public figures. The innovation is treating a widow’s grief as intellectual property that can be episodically mined for content, with each installment teased and released to maximize engagement metrics. This is grief as a franchise, tragedy as a content vertical.

Tyler Robinson, 22, awaits trial for Kirk’s murder, facing the death penalty. The FBI hasn’t released a motive. This vacuum of official information creates conditions where conspiracy theories flourish. Someone will supply explanatory narratives. The question is whether it will be law enforcement with evidence or influencers with incentives.

What used to require shame or social sanction to prevent now happens in broad daylight, because platforms are optimized for engagement rather than restraint, and because audience capture means creators answer to subscribers rather than broader norms. Five months after watching her husband die at a public event, Erika Kirk is the subject of a serialized investigation by someone with 4.47 million YouTube subscribers who timed the launch to overshadow her State of the Union attendance.

The first episode releases today.

Thanks for reading!
